The next version of the Chevrolet Impala won’t arrive until 2013 as a 2014 model. It will continue to be a front-drive only vehicle and will share a similar architecture to the upcoming Cadillac XTS flagship. Both vehicles will be built by GM Canada at the Oshawa, Ontario plant.

According to a report by GMI, GM’s new Executive Committee had approved these plans for a new Impala.

With the current Impala already long-in-the-tooth, there have been rumors that General Motors will release an updated version of the current car some time soon to keep it competitive. Chrysler is planning on releasing refreshed versions of the 300C and Charger, although all of these models have had long life cycles compared to the new Ford Taurus.

As a sign of how important Ferrari takes the emerging marketplace in China, the exotic Italian automaker has just announced a limited edition 599 China Edition model. Just twelve Chine Edition cars will be made in a special Rosso Fuoco red exterior paint, with the roof and pillars painted in gray.

The car was designed with the help of Chinese artist Lu Hao and features such exclusive items as a jade ignition button with the ancient Xiao Zhuan symbols for “engine start” printed on it. Chinese characters are also used for the tachometer, while a special luggage set will also be included. The luggage features an embroidered map of the Chinese silk road.

Just 12 of these China Edition 599s will be made with an even more exclusive one-off model also being built. This one-of-one 599 features a porcelain-look paint job and will be sold at auction later this month.

Honda apparently doesn’t think much for European designs. The Japanese automaker has just announced that it will close its European design studio, located in Offenbach, near Frankfurt, Germany. This is the latest cost cutting measure by Honda to reduce operational losses.

The R&D center is responsible for design of European Honda models as well as for motorcycles. Some of the more notable designs to come out of the German offices are the Neukom concept, unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show in 1999 and the OSM (pictured above), which was first shown in 2008.

‘There is no word on where automotive design will be transferred to, although motorcycle design is thought to be moved to Honda’s Italian design studio in Rome.

Honda has said that, for now, the non-design related R&D activities at the offices will continue.

Mustang-tuner Steeda has just released one photo of its upcoming 2010 Q-Series Mustang, which will get a full unveiling at the SEMA Show in early November.

Other than the look of this pony car (which we very much like), not much else is known. The bodywork was designed using CAD and then wind tunnel tested for optimal aerodynamics.

Once unveiled we do expect to find a full suspension upgrade, along with a serious supercharger under the hood.

“In all of our Q-Series of high performance Mustangs, we never compromise or take shortcuts,” said Dario Orlando, the founder of Steeda Autosports, “our customers who demand maximum performance, bullet-proof reliability, and class leading race honed styling wouldn’t have it any other way!”

Audi’s E-Tron electric R8 has been given the green light and should be on the road in two to three years. Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen has said that a car based on the E-Tron concept, which debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show last month, will be built. He expects fully functional examples to be ready in two years, but a production version may take slightly longer.

The E-Tron concept uses three electric motors (one for each wheel) to deliver true all-wheel drive quattro performance. Together the motors make 313hp and a ridiculous 3,319 ft-lbs of torque. Surprisingly, despite that giant power output, the car’s 0-62 mph time is just 4.8 seconds. The car’s total weight is 3,527 lbs, although over 1,000 lbs of that is the battery pack situated behind the passenger compartment but ahead of the rear axle. The E-Tron is capable of traveling 154 miles on a single charge.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated as progress on the E-Tron is made, especially as Mercedes is working to bring an electric version of the SLS supercar to market in the near future as well.

Report: Replacement for Displacement? Lincoln Pits V6 EcoBoost MKS Against European V8 Rivals

6versus8.com pits the EcoBoost MKS against European luxury cars in a race against the clock on a dangerous mountain pass

05/10/2009 | By: Colum Wood

Lincoln has just launched a new website called 6versus8.com, aimed at promoting the new MKS sedan. The website profiles, in high production quality video, a shootout between the MKS and four of its European rivals. The challenge, says Lincoln, was to see if the Lincoln V6 could hold its own against the V8s from the U.K. (Jaguar XF), Germany (BMW 550i and Mercedes E550) and Italy (Maserati Quattroporte). The location was Loveland Pass in Colorado.

The wording and even the website name is more than just a little misleading, however, as the Lincoln V6 is no normal V6, featuring not only two turbochargers, but also sophisticated direct-injection technology. For a V6, the Lincoln has plenty of power with 355hp and 350 ft-lbs of torque. For the record, that’s 5 less horsepower and 10 fewer ft-lbs than in the 4.8-liter BMW.

Additionally, at the 12,000 foot altitude at which the test was performed, the turbocharged Lincoln is at a natural advantage. With lower oxygen levels in the air at 12,000 feet, the naturally aspirated V8s aren’t performing optimally, while the Lincoln’s two turbochargers can compensate for the high altitude by working harder to achieve the same output.

In order to be “non-biased” Lincoln worked with Motor Trend and Automobile magazines, which timed the runs and even provided the driver: Rod Millen.

Still, as we’ve already mentioned, this is hardly a fair fight.

Considering Ford (and not the cash strapped and recently out of bankruptcy protection magazines) most likely paid for the whole thing, we’re quite surprised that (SPOILER ALERT) Lincoln didn’t win. The MKS did, however, manage second place, with the BMW 550i taking first. Third place belongs to the Mercedes, fourth to the Jag and dead last to the QPorte.

Ford (Lincoln) will be the real marketing winner out of this, however, as the company is cleverly using techniques like this to break down the barriers that car buyers (domestic car buyers in particular) have against smaller displacement turbocharged or supercharged engines. Ford wants to make people re-think the phrase “There’s no replacement for displacement” before it goes dropping the EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 engine into vehicles (like the Mustang of F-150) targeted at more traditional buyers.

Even knowing the results, we suggest you watch the videos for their pure entertainment value.

SX4_front_three_quarters.jpg

Along with a plug-in hybrid version of the Swift, Suzuki is planning to unveil a hydrogen fuel cell-powered SX4 concept model at the Tokyo Auto Show later this month.

Under the theme “Small cars, big future,” Suzuki will show the SX4-FCV and several other alternative fuel vehicles. This particular vehicle is powered by a fuel cell stack and a 10,000 psi hydrogen tank.

The Japanese automaker is currently testing the SX4-FCV on Japanese roads and plans to bring a production model to market in the near future. We won’t hold our breath…

In addition, Suzuki will also showcase a new Mio electric wheelchair powered by “direct methanol fuel cells” that can be replaced rather than just recharged. Three new two-wheeled vehicles will also be on display, including the Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter that, much like the SX4, uses hydrogen as a fuel-source.

Suzuki is looking to take its small car expertise to new heights (and new distances) by unveiling a new plug-in hybrid concept at the Tokyo Auto Show in just a few weeks. Based on the current Swift platform that is sold in both Japan and Europe, this PHEV uses a 658 cc gasoline engine (0.7-liters), along with a 74hp electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack.

Working much like the system int he Chevy Volt, the car runs on pure electric energy until the battery is depleted, at which point the gasoline engine kicks in to charge the batteries.

We’ll have to wait until the Tokyo Auto Show (starting October 21st) to find out more about how far the Swift PHEV will be able to travel and how little gas it will use. We also expect to hear when Suzuki plans to bring a production version of this car to market.

Nissan’s product planning head has made known plans to keep the GT-R legacy alive with an all-new R36 version of the car expected to debut by at least 2013.

Global product boss Andy Palmer made the comments to the folks at PistonHeads, during a recent visit to Nissan’s Nürburgring Technical Center this week. Palmer cited the hard economic times as the reason to cut certain projects within the company, but cited the importance of the GT-R as a performance halo car. The GT-R helps brand Nissan as a performance car company, much in the same way the upcoming Leaf electric car will help give the Japanese automaker a green appeal.

Palmer didn’t say much about the R36 GT-R other than the fact that we should expect the twin-turbo V6 powerplant to stay in place, as well as the all-wheel drive setup.

Nissan is committed to its flagship sports car and aims to stick to a production schedule that will see them compete with Porsche.

Mazda has announced plans to raise as much as $1.1 billion in capital to invest in hybrid technologies for future vehicles. The news comes roughly 8 months after the automaker laid out plans to improve the overall fuel economy of its vehicles through advancements to gasoline and diesel engines, as well as transmission improvements. Many of these technologies will debut on the Kiyora Concept, which will debut at the Tokyo Auto Show in just a few weeks.

With those advances well on their way to hitting the market in production vehicles over the next few years, Mazda is still playing catch-up in the fuel economy race. Much of this can be attributed to the fact that Mazda relied on Ford for hybrid technology. Roughly a year ago, however, Ford reduced its one-third controlling share in Mazda to just 13.8 percent – and the U.S. automaker isn’t interested in sharing its impressive new hybrid technology.

Despite these challenges, Mazda is reasonably secure, having recently cut its forecasted net loss for the year in half. The company cites higher than expected sales and a stronger Euro for the boost.
