First shown in concept format the New York Auto Show earlier this year, Mitsubishi has just officially debuted the new 2010 Outlander GT compact crossover at the LA Auto Show.

Most noticeable is the EVO-styled front grille, however, there are several other minor changes to update the Outlander to GT status. For starters there’s a revised 3.5-liter V6 with 230-hp and 215 ft-lbs of torque mated to a new six-speed automatic tranmission also results in improved fuel economy numbers, but the big-for-its-class Outlander still doesn’t get good results. At best Outlander models are rated at 21/27 mpg (city/highway) with the AWD V6 GT rated at just 18/24 mg.

What really sets the GT trim apart, however, is the addition of Mitsu’s Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system to deliver improved performance. The system comes with three settings, including Tarmac, Snow and Lock, for AWD grip to suit each situation.

Other GT trim highlights include standard 18-inch wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights and a 710-watt audio system.

PRESS RELEASE

The new-for-2010 Outlander GT showcases why it’s different for a reason with a fresh combination of seven-passenger luxury and road holding control. Occupying the top tier in the Outlander family, the Outlander GT uses premium materials and advanced features for an upscale feel. A restyled exterior joins an available FUSE Hands-free Link System ™ and the superior all-weather capability of the Lancer Evolution-derived Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system. The Outlander GT receives a revised 3.0-liter V6 engine, teamed with a six-speed sportronic® automatic transmission.

Powered by an updated MIVEC-equipped V6 engine, the Outlander GT offers greater power without sacrificing fuel economy. By improving the intake efficiency and raising the compression ratio, Mitsubishi engineers have managed to push output to 230 hp @ 6,250 RPM and 215 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 3,750 RPM. The increased engine efficiency has also allowed the Outlander GT to reduce its carbon footprint and CO2 emissions.

Complementing the refined power is the advanced driver control provided by Hill Start Assist and S-AWC. The S-AWC system utilizes a first-in-class Active Front Differential (AFD) and an electronically controlled center differential system, which distributes driving force intelligently from front to rear and left to right to the front wheels. The driver is able to use a “Tarmac, Snow, or Lock” selector knob to switch between modes, providing full-time traction during any weather situation.

The sportronic® automatic transmission’s six gears are also manually selectable with steering column mounted magnesium alloy paddle shifters. The transmission in the Outlander GT also provides increased fuel economy with the addition of Idle Neutral Logic (INL). By automatically selecting neutral whenever the Outlander GT comes to a stop, fuel consumption is reduced.

The Outlander GT now wears a distinctive jet fighter front grille, which evokes the sporty history of Mitsubishi’s family line-up. Backing up those looks is the addition of an all-new Lancer Evolution-inspired lightweight aluminum roof, which helps lower the center of gravity. The blacked out front bumper cover design is also similar to what is found on the Lancer Evolution model. Accenting the new face are the redesigned side sills, rear bumper, mirrors and 18-inch alloy wheels. A unique flap fold tailgate design allows easy access to the rear storage area for loading and unloading. Bi-xenon HID headlamps with daytime running lights are also now standard.

Inside, the Outlander GT displays a premium feel with a change to stitched synthetic leather on the dashboard and upper front and rear door trims. Chrome accents also surround the air outlet knobs and automatic climate control dials. A new high contrast multi-color LCD instrument display is on board to enhance both visibility and the sporty feel of the Outlander GT.

Standard user technology includes the FUSE Hands-free Link System™, a Bluetooth® 2.0 enabled system with advanced voice recognition for hands-free calling and wireless streaming of audio. USB connectivity has been incorporated into the FUSE system, allowing voice-command of music by Artist, Genre, Playlist, or Album through iPod® devices or USB-enabled thumb drives. A 710-Watt (max.), Rockford-Fosgate® Premium Audio system with SIRIUS® Satellite Radio and an ultrasonic wave sensor equipped security system are also standard on the Outlander GT. A 40GB HDD navigation system with rear view camera is also available, which for 2010 now includes Real-Time Traffic (RDS) service with no monthly fees.

Standard safety features in all Outlander models include Active Stability Control (ASC), an advanced dual-stage front air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) with occupant sensors, standard front seat-mounted side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags with roll-over sensors for the front and second-row seats.
