First unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the carbon fiber bodied Aston Martin DB9 (first thought to be a DBS), drew crowds even when competing with the launch of exotics like the Ferrari 458. Needless to say, not all those examining the ultra-thick carbon fiber weave were in favor of the modification. Germany tuner Mansory has shown examples of such extravagance in the past, but never before on a model as noble as an Aston Martin.

Along with the photos we snapped at the show, we now have a whole gallery of pics Mansory has supplied, showing the carbon creation revving its V12 engine in the wild.

Along with the notable carbon bodywork, Mansory built the DB9 as a full widebody with a new front end mimicking the one found on Aston’s upcoming supercar, the One-77. Thanks to these new photos we also get a great new look at the car’s incredibly custom exterior.

Toyota has said it will unveil a new hybrid concept car at the Detroit Auto Show, and according to recent reports it will be a subcompact and will go on sale in 2012. Two teaser photos of the car most certainly show a small car and now the Detroit News is reporting that as a subcompact it will slot in underneath the Prius in Toyota’s lineup.

The car will debut in concept form on January 11th at the Detroit Auto Show but has already been given the green light for production, with sales beginning in early 2012 in North America.

There is a possibility that this new subcompact hybrid will use the Prius name, as it already has a strong following and has become the most recognizable name in hybrids.

Toyota’s current subcompact is the Yaris, but it is not known if this new model will use the same basic architecture. It will, however, most certainly undercut the Honda Insight and is likely to get better fuel economy that the Honda hybrid. (Honda is expected to deliver a hybrid subcompact in the near future as well). Some reports have suggested it could use more powerful lithium-ion batteries, but we have to think Toyota will first debut that technology on the Prius plug-in hybrid.

In addition to this news, the Detroit News is reporting that a premium Lexus hybrid hatchback, based on the LF-Ch concept, is being fast tracked to market. It is expected to be called the CT200h.

***UPDATE*** For full details and photos of the 2011 Mustang GT see here ***UPDATE***

Along with two previous broken embargoes on details surrounding the details of the 2011 Mustang GT, we now have the first broken embargo of photos related to the car. As you can see, the 5.0-liter engine is for real and it looks pretty schnazzy too, with a nice engine cover that still shows plenty of V8 metal.

As has already been leaked out, the 2011 Mustang GT’s new 5.0-liter motor makes 412-hp at 6500 rpm and an impressive 390 ft-lbs of torque. Owners will be able to choose from either a 6-speed manual of a 6-speed automatic transmission, helping the 5.0-liter motor to get 25 mpg on the highway.

The new 5.0-liter engine is an all aluminum unit with four valves per cylinder and independent variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust ports. There are also specially tuned headers and a forged steel crankshaft.

Along with what’s new under the hood, the exterior of the 5.0 is mostly unchanged except for some nice retro “5.0″ badges on the fenders. The wheels also appear to be a new design.

The official embargo date is still set for the 28th at 12:01 a.m.and unless more info is (yet again) spilled prematurely, we’ll have even more to tell you then.

Ford Motor Co. and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (Geely) have reached a general agreement on the terms of a sale that would see Ford’s loss making Volvo unit sold to the Chinese automaker. An initial agreement is set to be signed in the first quarter of 2010, with the transaction complete in Q2.

Ford said in a statement that the sale, “would ensure Volvo has the resources, including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to focus on and implement its core ONE Ford strategy.”

While a general agreement has been reached, some details still need to be worked out and Geely is still working to secure funding from the Chinese government. Ford has said that it does not intend to keep a stake in Volvo once the sale is completed.

The sale of Volvo would mean the complete dismantling of Ford’s premium group of automaker, which at once point also included Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover. It is thought that the sale of those entities helped Ford avoid filing for bankruptcy protection.

Meanwhile, rival American automaker General Motors has had far less luck in selling off its brands, with sales of both Hummer and Saab pending (but constantly in doubt), while the domestic Saturn brand is now scheduled to be eliminated after a deal to sell it to the Penske Automotive Group fell through.

schumacher.jpg

He’s back! That’s right, seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher will make his return to the pinnacle of motorsports next year, driving for Mercedes-Benz. The German will join fellow countryman Nico Rosberg in representing Mercedes on the grid, starting March 12th at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

“It is a new chapter in my racing career and I am really looking forward to working with my old friend Ross Brawn and my companions from my days with the Mercedes Junior Programme,” said Schumacher in an interview. “I am convinced that together we will be involved in the fight for the Formula One World Championship next year and I am already looking forward to getting back onto the race track. For me, this partnership closes the circle. Mercedes supported me for so many years when I began my Formula One career and now I can hopefully give something back to the brand with the star.”

Schumacher returns to the sport after a planned comeback last year failed. He had intended to race in place of injured teammate Filipe Massa, but injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident prevented that from happening.  Schumacher now says he is fully recovered.

Schumacher retired from Formula 1 in 2006 after seven world championships and 91 overall wins. At the first race of the season, Schumacher will be 41, almost double the age of many just entering the sport.

The Mercedes team that he joins is actually the Brawn GP team (headed former Ferrari and Benetton technical director Ross Brawn), which was purchased by Mercedes in the off-season, after clinching the championship in its first year. The connection with Brawn has always been a strong one – and a successful one. Along with Schumacher’s five wins at Ferrari under the leadership of Brawn, his two other World Championships came at Benetton with Brawn at the helm.

When asked about Schumacher’s accomplishments, Norbert Haug, Vice-President of Mercedes-Benz Motorsports said that, “Michael has more of everything than every other driver.”

Report: Dutch Billionaires Steping-In and Russian Ones Exiting May Save Saab

Spyker CEO says GM has responded to offer and that European Investment Bank will need to play a role

22/12/2009 | By: Colum Wood

There are almost too many stories and rumors about Swedish automaker Saab to keep up with, as the latest reports suggest not one but two Dutch billionaires are involved in a new deal that would see Spyker purchase the loss-making division from General Motors.

Dutch business daily Het Financieele Dagblad suggests Dutch media tycoon John de Mol, who listed in the 2005 Forbes magazine wealthiest 500 people in the world issue, is the secret backer. De Mol, who owns production company Endemol with Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, as well as parts of telecommunications company Versatel and a part of Manchester United, also used to own one third of Spyker but sold his shares off several years ago.

The other rumored investor is another Dutch billionaire, Marcel Boekhoorn, who currently owns a 5.7 percent stake in Spyker.

Regardless of who is investing, the more important issue seems to be who is not, as Spyker’s 11th hour proposal is reported to have only been acknowledge by GM as it didn’t include Spyker’s Russian investors. Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet, reported that Russian investors Vladimir and Alexander Antonov, who own a 29.3 percent stake in Spyker, are no longer a part of the Spyker purchase.

General Motors feared Russian involvement as it believed the Russians might utilize Saab technology for other ventures in Russia – a market which GM sees as emerging and which it wants for itself.

With Dutch backers reportedly piling on and Russian ones leaving, Saab may be saved yet. However, according to a recent Bloomberg report, Spyker will still need to secure a significant loan from the European Investment Bank; likely in the absence of the Russian funds. Spyker CEO Victor Muller said as much, commenting that the EIB would need to get involved but the General Motors has looked at Spyker’s new proposal and that the two parties are talking and looking to find a solution that would save Saab.

New photos of the Honda CR-Z have surfaced online, this time showing the new hybrid sports car’s interior and engine. Inside the cabin looks quite premium and has a typically Honda design. The seats look extremely well bolstered, although head room doesn’t exactly look plentiful. There are photos showing both the manual and automatic (likely CVT) shifters, as well as a LCD display screen and several images showing the speedometer and how it changes color to reflect the driving efficiency.

There’s also a shot of the IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) powerplant, which consists of a 112-hp and 107 ft-lbs of torque 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine, which is mated to an electric motor, producing an additional 14-hp and 57 ft-lbs of torque. Honda claims a 0-62 mph time of 9.7 seconds.

As for fuel-economy, the CR-Z is rated at 52/59 mpg (City/Highway) in the Japanese test cycle. Those numbers aren’t expected to be nearly so high in North America once the EPA gets a hold of the CR-Z.

There’s no official word, but Honda may debut the production version CR-Z at the Detroit Auto Show on January 11th.

Contrary to previous reports that Chrysler will not present any new models at the Detroit Auto Show in just a few weeks, there is now word that the struggling U.S. automaker will show a new car based on a Lancia platform. The Lancia badge is a sub-brand under Fiat, which now runs Chrysler.

There is no word on what sort of a vehicle it will be, but Fiat is eager to help Chrysler where it needs help most – in the small and mid-size car market. This new model would be the first idea of how Fiat intends to integrate its European designs into the North American marketplace.

Previous reports have suggested the first new Lancia-based Chrysler model would be a premium hatchback, something along the lines of the Delta (above).

Fiat’s larger plan for Chrysler will have it closely integrated with Lancia, the two brands sharing platforms. Fiat has said Chrysler will revamp or replace all of its models over the next few years, adding four new Fiat based products by the end of 2010.

AutoGuide’s live coverage of the 2010 Detroit Auto Show starts January 11th.

With just 500 cars being built and a price of $375,000, the LFA isn’t really the sort of thing that you make a commercial for – but Lexus went ahead and did it anyway. Besides, this isn’t about marketing the car, but the Lexus brand as a whole.

The commercial is in Japanese, but that’s irrelevant because even in English you would have ignored all the words and just stared at the Japanese supercar and listened to its glorious V10 rev.

In case you have been living under a very large rock, the LFA is powered by a 4.8-liter V10 engine with 552-hp and 354 ft-lbs of torque. Weighing just 3,263 lbs thanks to a chassis and body that is mostly constructed of carbon fiber, the LFA can hit 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and tops out a 202 mph!

Currently the LFA is on a tour of the U.S., having just appeared at the LA Auto Show and with another scheduled date slated for the Detroit Auto Show, which starts January 11th.

02-toyota-ft-86-concept-press.jpg

Toyota built the FT-86 Concept to re-energize the brand’s image and it seems to have done just that, with young auto enthusiasts the world over itching to get their hands on the production version of this entry-level rear-drive sports car. Company press releases have boasted about the car’s handling capabilities and now it seems Toyota is planning to build the car’s reputation in the best possible way, through motorsports.

Now it’s not Toyota that will be running a professionally trained team in a big motorsports event, but rather the Japanese automaker’s hope that owners of the car will want to take it to the track.

According to a report in EVO magazine, Toyota will offer a stripped down version of the FT-86 with stiffer springs and larger brakes. It’s unlikely that this will be a track-only clubsport model, but rather a street-legal version along the lines of Hyundai’s new R-Spec trim of the Genesis Coupe.

We can’t wait!
