One of Germany’s most respected tuners is set to unveil a new Grand Touring supercar at the Geneva Auto Show in March. Based on a Mercedes SL (or SL65 AMG Black Series perhaps), the C25 supercar from Carlsson has a significantly redesigned body as well as some expectedly serious performance under the hood.

The 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine has been tweaked to produce roughly 750-hp and 850 ft-lbs of torque. We also expect a curb weight that is much lighter than stock thanks to the use of carbon fiber body components.

More than just a brute performer, Carlsson claims the C25 will be daily drivable and can be serviced at your local Mercedes dealer. At a price of $700,000 Carlsson aims to make the C25 even more exclusive by only building 25 different models – one for each country that it distributes it, meaning that the owner will be the only one in his country with one.

Report: Hyundai Tucson Blue Edition Coming With More Efficient 2.0-Liter 4-Cylinder

Tucson joins Accent and Elantra in Hyundai's Blue Edition lineup of highly fuel-efficient models

27/01/2010 | By: Colum Wood

Hyundai will expand its Blue Edition range of fuel-efficient “green” vehicles to include the all-new 2010 Tucson CUV. Last year Hyundai introduced the Blue Edition Accent and Elantra with mild adjustments to eek out a few more miles per gallon.

The Korean automaker’s plans for the Tucson Blue Edition are more significant, with a new engine being used. The standard 2010 Tucson is powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, itself a huge improvement over the past model with a fuel-economy rating of 23/31 mpg over the old model’s 20/25 mpg rating. The 2010 Tucson Blue Edition will get a smaller 2.0-liter Theta II engine and is expected to deliver fuel-economy closer to the 24/33 mpg mark.

Along with the Tucson’s lighter curb weight and electric power steering, the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder is 22-lbs lighter than the previous 2.0 thanks to engineering advancements. Hyundai hasn’t confirmed all the details of the new model but has said the Blue Edition Tucson is likely to include low rolling resistance tires, enhanced aerodynamics, revised gear ratios and different engine software.

If you’re a fan of the all-new Camaro, likely you’ve heard about the upcoming convertible version and seen the concept. In all those photos you haven’t seen the convertible top… and for good reason. It didn’t really exist.

According to a report by Automotive News, GM has awarded Magna the contract to build the Camaro convertible top with Magna expected to deliver roughly 20,000 units annually. That’s a big number and GM is obviously hoping the Camaro convertible will be as much of a success as the hard-top. (We can already hear the rental car agencies in Florida and California chomping at the bit to get at the drop-top Camaro).

With an projected sale of 20,000 units annually, the Camaro Convertible would then join the Mustang as the best selling convertible in America. There’s even the possibility that the Camaro rag-top could overtake the Mustang Convertible, which is what the coupe has done.

The convertible tops will be manufactured at GM’s Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky and we imagine final assembly will occur at GM’s Oshawa plant where the Camaro hard-top is manufactured.

GM has yet to officially confirm the Camaro Convertible for production and has yet to unveil a production model or set an on-sale date. It is expected that a Camaro Convertible could arrive later this year as a 2011 model.

Mitsubishi aims to double its sales in the U.S. in the next three years, says Mitsubishi North America Executive VP John Koenig. Last year the Japanese automaker sold just 53,986 vehicles in the U.S., down alarmingly by 44.5 percent compared to 2008. While the recession did hurt the automaker considerably, Koenig believes that much of the loss can be attributed to a heavy focus on fleet sales and a perceived brand instability, with reports that the company would pull out of the U.S. market.

Mitsubishi isn’t just hoping either, but has put together an extensive plan for the brand, which started by redesigning vehicles to look more like the stylish Lancer and continues with the launch of the new 2010 Outlander.

The next step, while still unconfirmed by Mitsubishi, will include the introduction of two new models to the marketplace, a smaller crossover (aimed at the likes of the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4) as well as a new subcompact model to slot in underneath the Lancer. The compact crossover market has grown considerably over the past few years and Mitsubishi’s Outlander grew in size during that time, leading compact CUV buyers to look elsewhere. A sporty new crossover like the ASX (also called the RVR), which is headed to its debut at the Geneva Auto Show in March, is just what the automaker needs. Mitsu has also targeted the emerging sub-compact market, with rumors that the Colt will return to take on the likes of the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, as well as newcomers like the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2.

A mini-car called the iMiEV is also set for the U.S. market, with Mitsubishi still deciding on if it will offer both a gasoline and electric version. Sales of this model, however, aren’t expected to be significant.

One area where Mitsu also needs to improve is with the Galant mid-size sedan, which is in desperate need of replacement. Koenig admits that one reason for a decline in Galant sales is a reduction in demand by rental car agencies – a strong sign that the car isn’t popular with consumers.

Mitsubishi’s plan isn’t as optimistic as it sounds and might just be an easily achievable goal, as with a lineup similar to the current one, Mitsu sold 128,993 units in 2007. And while the automaker has continued to slide in recent years back in 2002 it managed to move a significant 345,111 models

Along with a new list of products Mitsubishi is also looking to get more heavily involved in advertising and has already purchased numerous spots on network TV. Mitsubishi’s public relations head Maurice Durand commented that when it comes to the high-volume models like the Outlander and Lancer, “We have to work hard to enhance their perception and desirability.”

Report: Volvo Sale to Geely Set for February 8th

Sale of Ford's last European brand rumored to be for $1.8 billion

27/01/2010 | By: Colum Wood

07

According to a recent report, Ford’s sale of Volvo to Chinese automaker Geely could go through as early as February 8th. Ford and Geely have already announced they are working out details of a plan with the latest rumor indicating that the sale could be for as little as $1.6 billion, with a $1.8 billion asking price more likely.

Ford purchased Swedish automaker Volvo back in 1999 for a staggering $6.45 billion, as it looked to create a European luxury division – which also included Aston Martin, Land Rover and Jaguar. A new corporate strategy has seen Ford sell off all but Volvo, a move which has been slowed by the recent economic downturn.

By offloading Volvo, Ford looks to loose almost $5 billion in a decade as it pursues a more focused brand strategy. By offloading its European brands Ford was able to steer clear of bankruptcy court, a move than has instilled consumer confidence in the brand and seen its sales surge while other automakers watched their sales decline.

With the above mentioned vehicles no longer being sold Toyota has also decided to suspend their production while it take measures towards ensuring newly manufactured models are produced properly and without the potentially deadly defect. Manufacturing facilities affected include Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada where the Corolla, Matrix and RAV4 and produced; Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana where the Sequoia and Highlander are built; Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky – Line 1, where the Camry and Avalon and assembles; Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. which also builds the Camry and Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas where the Tundra is assembled.

“Helping ensure the safety of our customers and restoring confidence in Toyota are very important to our company,” said Group Vice President and Toyota Division General Manager Bob Carter. “This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized. We’re making every effort to address this situation for our customers as quickly as possible.”

Carter did not comment on when a fix would be in place or how long sales of the eight models and their associated production would be suspended.

Toyota recently announced a recall of 2.3 million vehicles for a potential sticking accelerator pedal. This latest recall comes just months after an even larger recall for 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus models which Toyota says could have a sticking accelerator pedal due to improperly installed accessory floor mats.

Saab and Spyker will form a new company, Saab Spyker Automobiles and the deal is expected to be finalized in February pending approval by several regulatory bodies and the Swedish government.

500x_ebay_winning_bidder.jpg

Recently we brought you the story of an ongoing saga between GenCoupe.com forum member McFly and the Kansas Hyundai dealership that refused to honor an eBay sale. The last installment of the story saw McFly thanking his supporters, which had inundated the dealership with emails and calls, to please stop as he had reached an agreement.

GenCoupe forum members and regular folks everywhere (mobilized by online media outlets) backed McFly after he won an eBay bidding war to purchase a Genesis Coupe 2.0T for $16,125, after the dealer, Glen Hyundai, reneged on the agreement.

The most recent agreement between Glen Hyundai and McFly now appears to have fallen through with McFly posting on GenCoupe that, “They breached the verbal agreement. I’m not giving the ins and outs of how they breached the verbal agreement, but that deal is over. The eBay contract is still 100%. They still owe me the car for $16125, and haven’t come through. They now have 15 days before I leave a negative on ebay (60 days to leave feedback ends Feb 9th) and this comes part of their permanent record. Of course, none of these posts are coming down again, if they only come through on eBay. Posts/information, and entire story, stays unless they want to come up with a better deal than the verbal one we had before, which they breached.”

McFly ends his post stating that he has now obtained the services of a lawyer.

Join us next week for the next installment of the ongoing McFly vs Glen Hyundai saga.
