Toyota’s youth-oriented Scion brand is open to the possibility of a pickup truck model says brand manager Jack Hollis. In an interview with Ward’s Hollis admitted that a compact pickup might fit well in the Scion brand, a reversal on previous statements that pickups are out of the question.

Initially Scion feared that compact pickups were too traditional, but now the truck market has changed and it could mesh nicely with Scion’s less traditional clientele. After all, Toyota has made a success out of the Tacoma, with sales of  111,824 last year doubling its nearest competitor, the Ford Ranger. However, the problem would be to not cannibalize the Toyota trucks for the benefit of Scion.

Hollis seems to have a plan. He believes, and rightly so, that compact pickups have grown over the years and evolved into something as capable as older full-sized trucks. As a result, Scion could build a truly compact pickup. Interestingly, Scion isn’t the only youth-oriented brand looking in this direction with Kia execs recently admitting that the Soul’Ster concept could be an attractive entry-level truck  – if it ever makes it to market.

While Scion has shown a concept truck based on the xB in the past, it was a SEMA Show car and not really an official concept. The Hako concept (below), which Scion showed at the New York Auto Show back in 2008 might be a closer idea of the direction Scion might head.

While speculation is rampant, Hollis admits that there are no plans to introduce any such model in the near future. Scion, a brand which has suffered a considerable drop in popularity as of late, with sales deceasing 49.1 percent last year, is looking to reinvigorate its lineup with several models rumored to be unveiled in the next 12 months, including a model based on the Toyota iQ mini car and a much-needed replacement for the tC.

Honda HSV-010 GT Race Car Officially Announced for Super GT Series

Honda Racing releases huge gallery of photos of HSV-010 GT race car

Honda Racing has officially announced the HSV-010 GT will join Japan’s Super GT racing series this year, releasing a huge selection of photos for those who just can’t get enough of the car. Based on the discontinued NSX replacement (yup, we’re still crying about it too), the HSV-010 is powered by a 3.4-liter V8 that makes 500-ish horsepower and 289 ft-lbs of torque. While the road car was expected to be powered by a V10 and get AWD, this race car is RWD and the V8 engine is thought to be a version of the V8 found in the Acura ARX ALMS cars.

Thanks to a stripped-down interior and bountiful use of carbon fiber, the HSV-010 weighs just 2,424 lbs.

The car will debut  on May 20-21st during the season opener, with four cars expected to compete.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that a successful racing season might make Honda reconsider a road version of the car. Then again, the HSV-010 will be up against some very steep competition in the Super GT series, including several race-prepped Nissan GT-Rs.

Unveiled late last week at the Tokyo Auto Salon, AutoGuide was first to bring you news of the mysteriously-named Lexus IS-F CCS Concept. It was easy to recognize the many changes made to the car, with plenty of body panels replaced by carbon fiber components, including the hood and truck. Now we have learned just what the “CCS” stands for and, as we expected, the name is “Circuit Club Sport.” Now we didn’t exactly foretell the name, but we did surmise that, much like the bright-orange BMW M3 GTS, this IS-F is a look at a potential track-ready version of the high-horsepower sedan.

Along with the lighter weight body components, there’s also an aero-enhancing front splitter (also made of carbon), plus some light-weight wheels, a lowered suspension and a new exhaust system that adds roughly 12-hp for a total of 428-hp.

There’s no word from Lexus or Toyota if there are any serious plans to bring this concept to production, but we’ re certain they’d find a few buyers.

Chevrolet is expected to unveiled the all-new 2011 Silverado 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups at the Chicago Auto Show in just a few weeks. The same show, just a year ago, is where Dodge launched the new Ram HD line. Later this year, Ford is preparing to introduce its new 6.7-liter Powerstroke-powered F-Series HD.

The truck is expected to ride on an all-new chassis and be powered by a new 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 with more power and better emissions. We also expect some more semi-truck styling to keep up with the looks of the competition.

MINI has just announced a list of engine enhancements for its European lineup in 2010, many of which are expected to be carried over to other markets. For starters, both the Cooper and Cooper S models get a slight boost in power. The Cooper gets a 3-hp jump to 122-hp, while torque is rated at 118 ft-lbs (160Nm), allowing a 0-62 mph sprint of 9.1 seconds. As for the Cooper S, it gets a new twin-scroll turbocharger that helps bring the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder to 184-hp (up 9-hp), while torque of 177 ft-lbs (240Nm) comes on from 1600 to 5000 rpm. The overboost function delivers 192 ft-lbs (260Nm). The Cooper S is rated at 7 seconds to 62 mph.

The bigger news in Europe, however, is likely to be the replacement of the 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a 1.6 -liter mill on the MINI First and MINI One models. In the First model, horsepower continues to be rated at 75-hp, but torque grows by 17 percent to 103 ft-lbs (140 Nm). Acceleration is less exciting, with a rating of 13.2 seconds to 62 mph, while fuel economy is a strong point at 52.3 mpg (EU test cycle).

As for the MINI One, the new 1.6-liter engine makes 98-hp and 113 ft-lbs of torque (153 Nm) to deliver 52.3 mpg (EU test cycle) and a 0-62 mph time of 10.5 seconds.

The 1.6-liter engine in both the MINI One and First use BMW’s VALVETRONIC variable valve timing technology, as well as an oil pump, vacuum pump and water pump that work in intermittent cycles to reduce drag on the engine and improve fuel economy.

In addition to these engine changes, MINI Europe has also announced several new high-dollar paint colors for 2010 including Sunlight Metallic, Asteroid Metallic and Nightlife Metallic.

MINI has also announced that despite all these changes to improve fuel economy and power, the 2010 models will not see an increase in sticker price.

BMW has just released details on a mild mid-cycle update for the 3 Series, including aesthetic and engine changes. Sadly, the rumors of a 335is, using the Z4 sDrive35is engine with 335-hp have yet to materialize, but the 335i model goes get some changes under the hood. Most importantly the 3.0-liter inline-six N55 block gets a single turbocharger, as opposed to the old twin-turbo setup. This same engine is also featured in the new 740i and was first introduced in the 535i GT, and BMW says it delivers improved emissions as well as reduced turbo lag. There’s no added power for 2011, with 300-hp staying constant, but the overall torque curve is improved, will full torque of 300 ft-lbs available from 1200 to 5000 rpm.

BMW has yet to release any specifics on fuel-economy improvements.

In addition, the new 3 Series coupe and convertible get some mild design changes with a new front bumper, grille and headlights, as well as new taillights. The 3 Series Coupe also adds solar reflective leather that BMW says will keep down seat temperatures when the top is down.

Take a look through the gallery below for all the aesthetic changes and see the official press release for all the nitty-gritty details.

Apparently not all big debuts happen at the Detroit Auto Show. Volkswagen made a splash at the Montreal Auto Show, by showing, for the first time in North America, the Euro-spec Golf R. First unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show last year, VW has yet to confirm this model for production in North America, but the fact that it’s being shown here means the German automaker is testing the waters.

In a statement Volkswagen Canada said that it, “brings this Concept vehicle to Montreal to gauge public reaction and solicit feedback in order to determine the desirability of a premium performance model like the Golf R Concept for sale in the Canadian market at some point in the future.”

A step above the GTI, the Ruses the same turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as found in the Audi TTS and makes 265-hp and 258 ft-lbs of torque. Combined with an all-wheel drive 4MOTION setup, VW claims a 0-62 mph time of just 5.5 seconds!

In addition, the Golf R gets a stiffer and lower suspension, larger and more powerful brakes, a special aero kit and dual exhaust tips. Inside there are new sport seats, special aluminum pedals and a flat-bottom steering wheel.

Sold for €36,400 in Europe, that would equate to over $50,000 based on current exchange rates. Realistically, however, a U.S. spec Golf R (or GTI R) is more likely to be slightly less well-equipped (meaning you can forget those nicely bolstered seats) and retail for closer to $30,000.

After covering all the major tuner and manufacturer booths located inside the Makuhari Messe’s Convention Center, we decided to wander the Tokyo Auto Salon’s floor to see if we could spot anything that interested us. It didn’t take long before this Abflug “Pink Spider” FD3S Mazda RX-7 really caught our eye.

Easily considered extreme by some, this RX-7 is an example of quality workmanship. The paint job is magnificent and we really love the wheels. More respect has to be given to the owner for the immaculate engine bay. North America may not have seen much of Mazda’s FD3S chassis over the recent years, but in Japan they are still one of the most respected tuner vehicles around.

Popularly known for tuning Audis, Sportechnic was present at Tokyo Auto Salon this year with an equal number of Audi and Porsche products. Alongside a Q5 and more highly modified A4 model, sat a Cayenne and a brand new Panamera. The Panamera was mostly stock except for a set of Sportech wheels. We’ll be interested to see where Sortechnic and other tuners (Japanese, German and even American) do with this incredible new platform.

While Subaru-fans in North America love the STI-tuned Impreza WRX, they are deprived of other STI cars offered in Suby’s home-market of Japan. One such model is the STI-tuned Legacy Wagon, sold as the Exiga 2.0 GT STI in Japan.

Powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer engine, the Exiga 2.0 GT STI makes 221-hp and 240 ft-lbs of torque. Additional highlights include an STI sport exhaust, 17-inch wheels, a leather shift knob, Alcantara seats, a subtle STI aero kit and a MOMO steering wheel.

This was also our first chance to see Suabru’s new Impreza WRX STI R205. The R stands for “Road Sport” and positions this model as the top STI in Suby’s lineup. Under the hood there’s a new turbo and ECU, along with a new exhaust system to deliver 316-hp and 319 ft-lbs of torque. The suspension has also been upgraded, as have the brakes, with new shocks and springs, as well as a a new front strut tower bar and lower arm brace. The brakes are six-piston front and four-piston rear units, with 18-inch cast aluminum wheels and special Bridgestone Potenza RE070 245/40/18 tires. Outside the R205 gets some new aerodynamics include a new front lip spoiler, new rear diffuser and rear spoiler, while inside the car remains stock except for some R205 badging.

The entire package has also been tested on the Nürburgring, where Subaru ran an R205 spec STI at last year’s 24 Hour race.

Just 400 Impreza WRX STI R205 models will be offered in Japan at a price of 4,510,000 yen (roughly $49,000).

Sadly, but not surprisingly, neither of these will be offered in North America.
