After Toyota recently debunked an ABC News report about sudden acceleration in its vehicles, the Japanese automaker has now decided to take on CNN, after the news outlet reported that Toyota knew about sudden acceleration issues as far back as 2002.

The story by CNN‘s special investigations unit reports that in a secret document Toyota admitted to electronic issues related to the throttle, even saying that in 2002, “Toyota had a sudden acceleration problem and that according to Toyota’s own technical service bulletin, the problem was electronic.”

Toyota has responded, essentially debunking the document and exposing CNN‘s faulty reporting; the “secret document” being a 2002 Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) published by Toyota and sent to all of its dealers as well as being publicly available online through several government and independent websites as well as through Toyota’s own site: https://techinfo.toyota.com. In fact, the 2002 TSB was discussed by Toyota Motor Sales USA President Jim Lentz during his appearance before the Congressional testimony looking into Toyota’s recall woes.

As for the content of the TSB, Toyota says that the issue was never sudden acceleration but rather, “a drivability issue at speeds of between 38 and 42 miles per hour at light throttle.” the TSB continues, “This condition was strictly related to a function internal to the transmission torque converter under certain throttle conditions.  It manifested as a slight rocking motion, or surge, while holding steady throttle at the specific speed window. This issue was in no way related to any kind of sustained acceleration.”

Toyota contests the misinterpretation of the word “surge” in the document, which is says has been taken out of context. Toyota’s statement says that, “The term surge has been used across the industry for many years to describe a condition where there is a very slight slow-down and speed-up perception (typically two miles per hour or less) while holding steady throttle at low to moderate speeds.” Toyota also says almost every other automaker has issued a similar TSB, with 80 such TSBs being published in the last 10 years.

It would appear as though CNN has now followed after ABC News, with horribly poor investigative journalism that puts ratings ahead of integrity, research and fact checking.

2011-kia-optima-interior1.jpg

Kia has just released a sketch showing the interior of the upcoming 2011 Optima [Magentis] mid-size sedan, ahead of its debut at the New York Auto Show next week. The sketch shows an overall sporty design with well-bolstered seats and a driver-oriented cockpit. Highlights include a three-spoke steering wheel, stitched leather seats and navigation system with a sizable screen.

As for the rest of the car, Kia has already said it is longer, lower and wider than its predecessor, which should result in a more comfortable ride, better handling and more interior room. Based on the same platform as the newly released Hyundai Sonata, the Optima doesn’t have quite the coupe-like look, with a rather high Lexus IS-like rear end. It features Kia’s “tiger” front end design with a flat nose and large grille, while LED lights are used on the bumper.

While no powertrain info has been provided, it’s safe to assume that much like the Sonata (reviewed here), it will receive a GDI (gasoline direct injection) 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with 198-hp and a six-speed transmission. In the Sonata that engine gets 22/35 mpg (city/highway). With Hyundai set to unveil a 250-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged Sonata and a Hybrid at the NY show, it’s likely that Kia will do the same either in NY or soon after.

Kia claims the new Optima will have class-leading safety and luxury equipment.

AutoGuide will be on hand in New York for the official debut, with live coverage starting March 31st.

Chevy has announced that the first of just 500 limited edition Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition models will be sold to the highest bidder at the Palm Beach Barrett-Jackson auction. Not only will the winning bidder take possession of the car, created to celebrate 50 years since a Corvette first raced at Le Mans, but he or she will also be given a tour of GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich., where the LS7 and LS9 engines in the Z06 and ZR1 are assembled by hand, and be able to watch the car be assembled at the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Ky.

Notable highlights of the Carbon Edition Vette include Brembo carbon ceramic brakes (straight from the ZR1), as well as 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, coated in Michelin PS2 tires. Upgraded engine and transmissions coolers are part of the package, as is a Magnetic Selective Ride Control system. And let’s not forget a special carbon fiber hood (lighter than the one used on the ZR1), as well as a carbon fiber engine cover, carbon fiber rocker panels and front splitter. There’s even a ZR1-inspired rear spoiler, plus black headlights and mirrors.

Chevy claims that on a race track like Laguna Seca, the Carbon Edition model will be up to three seconds faster per lap.

“The Corvette Z06 Carbon will surely be an instant collectible,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President, Chevrolet Marketing.  “For that reason, we see Barrett-Jackson as the premiere venue to sell the first retail Z06 Carbon.”

Chevys have a long history of fetching high prices at auction, with the first 2010 Corvette selling from $350,000 and the first ZR1 selling for one million dollars.

The Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction runs from April 1st to 3rd.

Retail sales of the 2010 Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition will begin this summer.

In love with Honda’s HSV-010 GT race car replacement for the NSX in Japan’s Super GT Series? Then you won’t want to watch this. At the very first race of the season at Suzuki, three of the GT500 class cars collided on the front straight, taking out two in spectacular fashion.

The video shows the No. 32 Epson HSV-010 the No. 8 ARTA HSV-010 and No. 18 Weider Honda come together in a sandwhich, resulting in both No. 8 and 18 hitting the tire wall at the end of the straight. Takashi Kogure, who was piloting the No. 18 car, was the pole sitter for the race and was poised to contend for the top of the podium.

Instead, the HIS Kondo Nissan GT-R took the checkered flag, with the top Honda (the No. 100 Rabrig car) placing 3rd.

599gto-cap-630op.jpg

Here it is, the first image of Ferrari‘s upcoming 599-based supercar. The team at Fast Lane Daily claim that this single photo is the very first official pic of what is reported to be called the 599 GTO.

Inspired by the 599XX, the GTO will get an upgraded version of the same 6.0-liter V12 engine that powers the Enzo. With output rated at 620-hp in stock form, the 599 GTO should produce anywhere from 650 to 700-hp. Following after the F430 Scuderia, the GTO will get a considerable weight reduction (around 200 lbs). It’s also slated to get a quicker shifting transmission, although it’s not yet clear if Ferrari will stay with the current F1 transmission and increase shift times to 60 milliseconds, or the Italian engineers will swap out the old six-speed box in favor of a seven-speed dual-clutch unit, borrowed from the 458 Italia.

With this image leaking, we expect to get some concrete details on the car in the coming weeks and months, although its not slated to be officially unveiled until the Paris Auto Show this fall.

LEAF_16.jpg

Infiniti has already made it clear that it will bring an electric car to market and according to recent reports, the luxury EV will be based on Nissan’s upcoming Leaf electric car. Due out around 2014, the Infiniti version will be zero-emissions, but it won’t be slow. By that time, Nissan/Infiniti plans that lithium-ion battery advancements should allow a range similar to the Leaf (roughly 100 miles), while offering improved performance. Currently, the Leaf is rated at 107-hp and 207 ft-lbs of torque.

Understandably, the car will get an all-new body, which should be a sexy as the rest of the luxury lineup. A premium interior is also sure to be included.

In an interview with Top Gear, Infiniti’s UK boss commented that the brand is looking to take a more mass-market approach to electric cars. “We want lots of buyers quickly, so we are making a family car. We have no intention to make a niche EV. Besides, big vehicles are too heavy for today’s batteries, which is why our car will be compact.”

In addition to electric cars, Infiniti will launch its first hybrid model in 2011. The M35 Hybrid uses the G35′s 3.5-liter V6, paired with an electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack and Infiniti’s 7-speed automatic transmission to deliver rear-drive performance, with improved fuel economy. While no engine or fuel economy numbers are available, the 3.5-liter V6 likely makes about 300-hp, while the electric motor adds 67-hp and 199 ft-lbs of torque. This shoudl deliver a marked improvement over the new M37’s 18/26 (city/highway) rating.

Kia recently unveiled the sporty SX trim level version of the 2011 Sorento crossover at the Atlanta Auto Show. Unfortunately Kia hasn’t released any photos yet and we don’t have our own because we weren’t at the Atlanta show. In fact, we’re pretty sure no one from anywhere but Atlanta was at the show. So why would Kia unveil the car there, you ask? It’s simple, the Sorento is Kias first vehicle to be built in the United States at the Korean automaker’s West Point, Georgia facility,  Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG).

The SX trim level will be offered exclusively with the 276-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine and six-speed transmission. Upgrades include a new front and rear bumpers, LED taillights, a chrome exhaust tip, chrome roof rails, stainless steel skid plates and 18-inch wheels. Added sport upgrades include a suspension that has been lowered by half an inch and Dual Flow Damper shock absorbers that are designed to improve handling while retaining ride comfort.

Inside there are stainless steel pedals and a metallic gauge surround, not to mention added standard equipment like heated leather front seats, an auto-dimming mirror, navigation with a back up camera and a 10-speaker Infinity Audio surround-sound system.

Kia should release pricing when the car goes on show next week at the New York Auto Show. We’ll be sure to bring you plenty of photos as well, with live NY Auto Show coverage starting March 31st.

The General Motors Autobots are calling in reinforcements for the third installment of the Transformers franchise… from Italy. That’s right, the newest Autobot won’t be from a far-off galaxy, but from Italy – Maranello to be specific.

Director Michael Bay has confirmed on his personal blog that a Ferrari 458 Italia will play the role of a yet-unnamed good guy.

Bay had a few more details about the upcoming movie, which starts filming soon. Shooting will take place in LA, Chicago, Washington DC, Florida, Texas, Africa, Moscow, and China. As for the cast, it will include Frances McDormand, John Malkovich and Ken Jeong – known for his work in the Hangover and as Senor Chang from the TV show Community.

There’s still no word on if a Gallardo has joined the Decepticons.

2006-brabus-b-class_1600x0w.jpg

In the past, if you wanted a high-performance Mercedes B-Class, you’d have to look to the aftermarket and even then, the best tuners like Brabus could offer was a 190-hp diesel version that hit 62-mph in 8.4 seconds. Not exactly high-performance.

With the next-generation B-Class, however, AMG is going to get involved. Set to launch in the U.S. in 2012, the next B-Class is being created to take on cars like the Audi S3 and Golf R in Europe. Yet while those models aren’t offered in North America, the B-Class AMG likely will – in a bid to attract younger buyers to the Mercedes brand.

Power will likely come from a turbocharged 4-cylinder and like all AMG models, expect a sporty suspension, larger brakes, new bodywork and an upgraded interior.
