2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty

Back in 1892, after almost 20 years developing a more efficient version of Karl Otto’s four-stroke internal combustion engine, Dr. Rudolf Diesel, patented his design for the Combustion Power Engine, in which air is compressed to the point that the heat generated allows it to ignite without the need for spark. Thanks to its efficiency and incredible torque capacity, the diesel engine has become a mainstay in larger pickups, over-the-road trucks, heavy equipment and many European private vehicles. However, today; 118 years after Dr. Diesel patented his design, another Rudolf has created, what is perhaps the next step in the evolution of Diesel’s original engine concept.

Dr. Rudolf Gunnerman, has created GDiesel, a new fuel for diesel engines that combines conventional ultra low sulfur diesel with natural gas, which is mostly methane.

Dr. Gunnerman’s company, Advanced Refining Concepts, blends ultralow sulfur diesel and natural gas at a 2-1 ratio — a gallon of diesel in relation to a half-gallon of natural gas — using a proprietary set of four metallic catalysts. This blending process allows the diesel to absorb the methane’s component atoms, hydrogen and carbon, resulting in a chemical reaction that makes it more combustible than conventional diesel fuel.

Dubbed GDiesel, Gunnerman’s fuel is said to yield up to a 30 percent improvement in fuel economy. It’s also compatible with existing fuel storage and dispensing equipment and requires no modifications to vehicles or power-generating equipment.

ARC is in the final stages building a refining facility in Nevada that will be able to produce up to 100,000 gallons of GDiesel a day. In the future, smaller GDiesel refineries may be built near ready supplies of natural gas and methane, such as by a garbage dump or large farm, where methane can be harvested as a waste product.

Dr. Rudolf Diesel originally envisioned his engines would be able to run on vegetable oil, but modern feedstock fuels have been unpopular because they use valuable land  for harvesting crops and generally aren’t available in large enough volumes to permit competitive prices against current supplies of diesel or gasoline. But because Dr. Gunnerman’s GDiesel, doesn’t have an impact food supplies (like say Ethanol), doesn’t require any changes in infrastructure and is able to be used in existing diesel engines without modification, perhaps the U.S. has found a really workable solution for powering vehicles in the future. So while some may say that history doesn’t repeat itself; when it comes to diesel technology and a pair of doctors named Rudolf, it appears to come darned close.

2011maybach00medium.jpg

If you’re like us, you probably forgot all about Maybach when you saw the new interior of the Audi A8L, set to debut at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show. Apparently the folks at Maybach were equally impressed and have decided to “refresh” their current lineup for next year. You’d think that “refresh” would mean the platform has been upgraded so it no longer rides on an 11-year old S-Class chassis, but unfortunately, we aren’t so lucky.

Production will continue on the 57, 57S, 62 and 62S limousines with a handful of cosmetic, interior, and electronics tweaks to justify the undoubtedly astronomical price tag. All models get new grilles, including a different grill for ‘S’ models, and additional sound dampening to keep road noise down. ‘S’ models also get a few extra ponies squeezed out of the V12, now up to 630-hp.

Inside, passengers get a divider to separate themselves from their drivers, and optional 19-inch monitors in back instead of the standard 9.5-inch units, wireless internet, quilted leather, Swarovski Crystal trim, plus an optional perfume atomizer from the Zeppelin. Of course technology has been improved, with available wireless internet now available.

The updates to the Maybach lineup are minimal in a halfassed attempt to maintain some interest in the models before Mercedes admits its mistake and eliminates the brand by 2014.

China is now Bentley’s third largest market, having sold 421 cars there in 2009. Now, the British luxury marque is launching yet another special edition of its Continental GT. Dubbed the “Design Series China” edition, the car, which is set to debut at the Beijing Auto Show Friday features an exterior wing badge, door sill plates and a dash plaque bearing the “Design Series China” label, while customers can pick from a selection of exclusive exterior paint and a three-tone leather interior.

Also making its debut is the Flying Spur Speed China, which features a special comfort tuned suspension, a quieter exhaust system, similar badging to the Continental GT and the addition of the Bentley logo on the C-Pillars.

Pricing details have yet to be announced, but if you have to ask…

parkingOne of the most famous YouTube videos in the last year has got to be the “Worst parking job ever,” a clip ran by news channel CP24 after a BMW X5 drove over two parked cars at a Newmarket, Ontario gym.

We weren’t sure an X5 could drive over anything, until 62-year-old Tripta Kaushal showed us how it’s done —thanks to hidden camera surveillance footage.

Thankfully, the police caught up to her, and after pleading guilty was given a small $500 fine, ordered to pay restitution to the two victims, six months probation, and banned from driving between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

We’ve embedded the original clip after the jump, as well as Hyundai Canada’s response — see, the blue car is an Elantra GT, and the owner of that wrecked car was given a brand new Elantra Touring in the aftermath.

Sweet deal, and we may just hire Kaushal to run Dakar for us next year…

Taxamera

As German magazine Autobild reported, a Porsche Panamera Turbo taxi has been providing high-speed transit in Stuttgart and they’ve got the video evidence to prove it. Check it out after the jump.

The question this raises is, how much longer before an all-out taxi war heats up in Germany at the ultimate public toll road, the Nürburgring Nordschleife? BMW already provides high-speed service around the world-famous Ring with a fleet of M5′s, so we’re hoping Porsche’s taxi might be a precursor to a fleet of Ring cabs designed to give the big Bimmer sports sedan a run for its ‘Green Hell’ money.

It won’t be easy for Porsche to match BMW’s Ring Taxi program though, given the significant cost the Bavarian automaker incurs by keeping their fleet of M5′s fresh and driven by experienced racing drivers such as Andy Priaulx, Jörg Müller, Sabine Schmitz of Top Gear fame, Claudia Hürtgen and further instructors of the BMW Driver Training program.

Still, we’d be up for a ride, especially considering the Panamera is the fastest 4-door round the ‘Ring.

Ford's Terrain Management System on the all new Explorer SUV

Surely, being part of a much smaller company affords Land Rover employees certain…perks. Other than a company blog (rare for an automaker), it seems the U.K.-based off-road specialists also allow employees like Andrew Polsinelli, general manager of product planning for Land Rover North America to say things that would have been censored in a larger company.

In a blog post entitled: “Terrain Response or Terrain Management — Remember where it was invented,” Polsinelli begins by saying: “Naturally we’re flattered that our friends at Ford are planning to mimic Land Rover’s award-winning Terrain Response system for their upcoming 2011 Ford Explorer…”

Ruh-roh! But wait, there’s more. “You may have seen a new video that’s making the rounds on YouTube where Todd Hoevener, New Explorer Vehicle Dynamics Manager, is extolling the virtues of the Explorer’s new Terrain Management System. We would expect the Explorer’s system will work well; after all, Todd’s boss, Jim Holland, the Chief Engineer, Explorer Platform Program, spent three years working at Land Rover in the U.K. as Chief engineer for Range Rover.”

Zing! And what would a piece of feature marketing be without a subtle game of one-upmanship?

“But while appearing to be similar in concept…to custom-tune the engine and drivetrain to provide maximize traction — it won’t have the six years of sophistication and refinements of Land Rover’s Terrain Response system.”

After the jump is Ford’s official Terrain Management System video:

Some of the baddest street cars of all time are little more than race cars with a few concessions thrown in to make them suitable for day-to-day use. The Jaguar XK-SS was barely more than a LeMans-spec D-Type with a passenger seat. Nissan would sell special editions of its Skyline GTR that were stripped down for Group N road-racing, while the Big Three were fond of selling drag-strip specials from the factory.

Putting plates on a real race car is a different matter, legally and otherwise, but it didn’t stop one French motorist from doing just that to a Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo. The Super Trofeo was developed for the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo one-make series, with a production run of just 30 cars. Based on the LP560-4, the Supertrofeo pumps out 570 horsepower through Lamborghini’s 6-speed e-gear sequential transmission. With a curb weight of only 2900 lbs, the Super Trofeo should have no trouble getting away from any overly curious gendarmes or sportbikes.

There’s an old adage that floats around the drag racing track that goes something like this: “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” Sometimes this means throwing in a 100-shot of nitrous oxide to keep up with the competitors, or dropping your credit card at the local shop to replicate what someone else has done.

While this Mustang probably had other ways of beating its competition, Jeff Wilson of Jaw’s Gear and Axle decided to shoe-horn a Toyota Supra 2JZ-GTE powerplant into his Ford Mustang. Forget the big displacement and heavy torque that every Mustang-fanatic brags about. The turbocharged inline-six will be making a statement to everyone at the drag strip for its reliability, strength and horsepower potential.

We’ve seen plenty of videos of Supras generating more than 1200-hp as well as blistering the quarter mile in 7-second passes. So it’s no surprise that this Ford Mustang will probably devastate some of its competition while raising plenty of eyebrows and stirring controversy within the pits. Look for the Jaw’s Gear and Axle Mustang at WCHRA events in the LT5 class for 2010. The project is a combination of minds with Titan Motorsports contributing parts, Enterprise Motorsport’s fabrication skills, Dave Engine’s engine building, Black Sheep Racing’s technical knowledge and world-renowned tuner John Reed. We’re looking forward to seeing Jaw’s Gear and Axle’s Mustang take on the competition!

hamann_z4_1.jpg

Founded in 1986 by Richard Hamann, Hamann Motorsport has been personalizing and customizing a plethora of European makes including Audi, Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Mini, Ferrari, Fiat, Jaguar, Land Rover, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce, Porsche and Lamborghini ever since. Even though they have a collection of goods for all these various makes, Hamann is best-known for its BMW tuning programs. Much like Brabus is for Mercedes-Benz, Hamann is for BMW. So it’s no surprise that the German tuner has just released a new list of modifications for the newly face lifted BMW Z4 Roadster.

For those that are fans of Hamann’s styling, there’s simply no way to mistake it for something else. There is a sense of consistency in all their products from their subtle lip kits to full bumper replacements. The newest edition to their catalog is for the E89, with a collection of goods to not only look good, but to go fast. Your typical front bumper, side skirts, rear valence and rear spoiler is available in addition to (yet again) LED day lights in the front bumper.

Under the hood, performance enhancements boost horsepower from 306 to 360 and torque jumps from approximately 295 ft-lbs to close to 400 ft-lbs. The stylish matte black wheels are available in a 20-inch variety – staggered of course. (We really love the way these rollers look, but Hamann seems to stick them on every model.) The package also gets the car stiffer and closer to the ground by 30mm.

The hard top roadster from BMW is looking more and more appealing with each generation, and Hamann’s enhancements only make it more beautiful.

Check out the official press release after the break.

Chevrolet has just released details of the new Volt MPV5 Concept car, which debuts today at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show. Based on the Volt’s platform, this 5-seater adds plenty of functionality (not to mention style), as well as including the Volt’s revolutionary range-extender Voltec powertrain.

Despite the MPV in the name, Chevy still refers to this car as a crossover. Compared to the Volt, this MPV5 Concept has a wheelbase that is just 15mm longer, with a 181mm (7-inches) longer overall length. Its also wider and taller than the Volt by 73mm (2.9-inches) and 182mm (7.2-inches), respectively. This allows for added passenger and cargo room with a total of 30.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a total of 62.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat.

Like the Volt, power comes from an electric motor and lithium-ion battery with the gasoline engine adding additional range. Chevy claims a pure electric 32 mile range on an EPA city cycle, with an additional 300 miles once the gasoline engine kicks in.

With the launch of the original Volt set for later this year, GM is using concepts like the MPV5 to show that the Voltec propulsion system is adaptable to different platforms – many of which we are likely to see in the years to come.
