Following in the footsteps of BMW and Porsche, Mercedes-Benz is going to be embarking on their own design odyssey that will see them create the shape of furniture, industrial design and “lifestyle” products through a series of licensing agreements.
Gorden Wagener, head of design at Mercedes-Benz explains that ” a product manufacturer will be granted the right to use the styling, but all rights to the styling remain with Mercedes-Benz…” which to us sounds like little more than the three-pointed star whoring out its brand to makers of other, non-automotive products, provided they look cool and meet certain standards.
But who are we to judge? The auto market has been crap lately, and the Carrera aviators (licensed from Porsche) have been a hit with the high-fashion Kanye West crowd. Ferrari makes a good chunk of their profits from licensing the brand to any and all comers. Why shouldn’t M-B get in on it? And some of the concept drawings look pretty damn cool to boot.
