The next-generation of new MINI Cooper models will be powered by turbocharged direct-injection 3-cylinder engines. According to a report by MotoringFile, the new turbo DI 3-bangers will deliver MINI D-like diesel efficiency – somewhere in the range of 50-mpg on the highway!
Somehow the MINI (BMW) engineers are planning to produce roughly the same amount of power in the new models, meaning about 120-hp in the Cooper and 180-hp in the Cooper S. It’s not yet clear if the Cooper S will also be a turbo 3-cylinder or if it will keep a turbo 4-cylinder engine. We have to think getting 180-hp from a turbocharged 3 would require some might expensive engineering.
One possibility is that different 3-cylinder engines will be used in different models, with varying displacements. A model like the standard Cooper would get a 1.3-liter, while the Cooper S a larger 1.5-liter.
