While Volkswagen has no plans to bring its small Up! mini car to the U.S., we will get the planned electric version of the urban commuter. The folks at Automobile Magazine claim VW is planning to introduce the E-Up! in select U.S. markets in 2013 – possibly badged as the Up blue-e-motion.
That same year, VW is also set to launch an electric Golf and Jetta. The Golf bue-e-motion concept has already been shown, powered by a lithium-ion battery and electric motor, making 113-hp and 199 ft-lbs of torque, with a range of 150 km (93 miles). Acceleration is rated at 11.8 seconds to 62 mph, with a top speed of just 140 km/h (87 mph).
All these will, however, launch in limited numbers as original test vehicles before Volkswagen begins full-scale production.
Starting in 2012, VW will also roll out the first of several new hybrid models, including a hybrid Jetta, followed by a hybrid Golf and Passat in 2013. The VW Golf and Jetta hybrids are expected to use a powertrain similar to that found in the New Compact Coupe Concept, where a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 148-hp and 177 ft-lbs of torque and is mated to a 27-hp electric motor. When combined with VW’s 7-speed DSG transmission, the NCC achieves an impressive 45 mpg.
