Despite reports that Chevrolet‘s Volt hybrid is capable of only running on premium gas, it turns out that the car is capable of running on regular gas…sort of.
A GM spokesman told Autoblog Green that the Volt is equipped with a knock sensor like most every other car on the market. If regular gas is detected, the knock sensor can dial back engine spark to ensure that the motor isn’t damaged. One of the main reasons behind the selection of premium gas was that high octane fuel has a longer life than regular gas. Due to the Volt’s ability to run 40 miles without any gasoline power, this is a major consideration, as customers in urban centers could likely drive without ever using the gasoline motor.
