Dodge Dakota Replacement Confirmed; RAM, Jeep Considering New Pickup Models

Dominating the headlines following Chrysler‘s first dealer meeting in three years yesterday was news of a new Viper planned for 2012. But apart from headline-grabbing sports cars, Chrysler execs made plenty of comments regarding the company’s commitment to the truck and SUV segment.

For the new RAM brand, CEO Fred Diaz commented that his team is studying bringing a “Baby Ram” to market, with an estimated 30-mpg and room for four. This could replace the Dodge Dakota as RAM’s entry-level work truck, with a next-generation Dakota confirmed to take more of a lifestyle direction.

The RAM brand also has plans to target lifestyle truck buyers with a luxurious “Longhorn” model that will debut at the Texas State Fair in two weeks. RAM execs didn’t comment on if it would bear any resemblance to the Mopar Dodge Ram Bianco model shown at last year’s SEMA Show. The truck will, however, feature a Longhorn logo that can be removed from the floor mat and used as a belt buckle.

As for features, the “Ram Box” storage area currently found on the 1500 model trucks, will be made available on the 2500 and 3500 heavy duty work trucks.

And finally, Jeep execs hinted at expanding their lineup to include a pickup truck, rolling out what is believed to be the Jeep Gladiator Concept from several years back. Jeep execs would not comment on if this model was slated for production.

I like the look of that Jeep Truck. The bed isn’t very big to be truly useful, but the boxy exterior helps to make up for that.

  • CJ

i hate the boxie look thats why im a big fan of the 94-08 dodge trucks and excpecialy the 94-02

  • Tom in PA

I really like that Jeep truck! And thats the way they need to build it. Dana 44’s with lockers and Diesel power as options for the Gladiator. Done like that they would sell!

if this is truly the dakotas replacement dodge has fianlly made a dakota owner happy

  • Corey Dail

I will miss the Dakota. I have had three of them. All extended cabs. A true mid size pickup. Fits most any parking space. I see mostly crewcabs on the road with small short bed. Not much use as a pickup like that, just a kid hauler.

Loove my Dakota. I have had 2. A 1991 that I had for 18 years, still running great when I traded it in on my 2006. Can’t wait to see the new model. two things I wish they would consider a little higher ground clearance on the TRX model and maybe a small diesel. The jeep concept looks awesome may hve to trade in my cherokee if that comes out.

Have had 4 Dakotas and am disappointed its being dropped. Hope Ford builds the F-100 so I can replace my 2011 Dakota with same size truck. Dodge has lost the edge they gained in 1994. Have bought many full size Dodges since 94. for my business. Dropping the extended cab to only offer standard or 4 door makes no sense. Buying this 2011 Dakota was the worst buying experience I have ever had. Their packages make no sense. I now have a 2011 with the wheels I don’t want and less features then my 2006 for only 30,000.00 Thanks a lot Dodge.

I’VE HAD MY D-DAKOTA(2000)FOR 9YRS LOVE IT I HOPE THAT THEY DON’T DO AWAY WITH MY D-DAKOTA TRUCK,I’VE DIDN’T LIKE THE LAST YRS BODY AT ALL….THE YRS OF 06,07.WAS THE BEST BODY STYLE,THEN IT ALL CHANGED TO THIS UKLEY BOXED FRONTIN LOOKS LIKE THE (FORDS)IF THERES IS TO CHANGES GO BACK TO THE 06,07 MODELS.AND PUT MORE HORSEPOWED ENGINES,THE 4.7,4.9 ARE GREAT,BUT NEEDS MORE FUEL MILAGE.THE UKLY JEEP VERSION IS OK FOR SOME BUT NOT TO REPLACE THE DODGE DAKOTA…THIS NEEDS TO BE THE N-E-W LUXUARY TRUCK OF A-L-L TRUCKS.SO DON’T DROP THE DODGE DAKOTA TRUCK….FOR I FOR ONE WILL CHANGE TO ANOTHER BRAND OF TRUCK.PERHAPS A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE WILL DO THE SAME.LONG LIVE THE DODGE DAKOTA!!!!”THE NEW LUXURY TRUCK”

  • Fktsarg

The problem with the Dakota replacement is that nobody is going to be able to afford it.  You would think that Dodge would make a sporty/sleek Dakota with an affordable price tag and you would watch them fly off the lots.  I would NEVER purchase the jeep PU.  1- its ugly   2- gas mileage  3- price and 4 it just does not appeal to me.  Dodge/Jeep this is a looser!!!

  • Fktsarg

PS.  they had a model of a sporty Dakota on line, what ever happened to that vehicle????

  • cof200

what taking so long to come out with jeep gladiator just put into production already
