With the launch of the Chevy Volt, GM is now pushing ahead with plans for more electric vehicles but the newest EV from Detroit won’t be sold here. In fact, it won’t even really be from Detroit, instead it will be built in China and exported to India.
Based on the Chevrolet New Sail subcompact, it will be the first of three new electric cars being developed for different markets. The second model is rumored to be a version of the Chevy Cruze, and will be built and tested in South Korea.
While the Volt does also feature a gasoline engine that allows for a 350-mile range, the new electric cars will be pure electrics, with a much shorter total distance – most likely around 100 miles. These vehicles will be better suited to Asian and European markets where commuting distances are far shorter.
According to Karl Slym, president and managing director of GM India, the new GM electric car will debut next year, likely at the New Delhi Auto Expo.
