Fans of the BMW 8-Series grand tourer may be slightly disheartened to hear that the new eco-sports car coming from the Bavarian mark will wear the legendary designation that once adorned the Teutonic barges of the early 1990s. Of course, internet-land rumors can only go so far, and some reasoned analysis can always help sift through the noise.
A report at BMW Blog, from one of their trusted sources, claims that the newly trademarked “i” Series will be used to denote the new range of “green” cars, with the i8 acting as the range-topping halo vehicle. However, BMW Blog casts some doubt on this premise, with the most reasonable counter-argument being that the EfficientDynamics launch is still 3 years off, and BMW has likely not decided on a concrete name for the car.
Given that automakers generally trademark names en masse well in advance of a vehicle’s launch, we’d be inclined to think that the i8 name is available to use, but may not end up ever seeing the light of day.
