Now here’s something you don’t see every day. And be thankful you don’t.

One of Vivid Racing’s customers, Shawn, out in Singapore, sent them over these shots of his Mazda RX-8 sporting a custom widebody conversion and a lot of design cues taken from Lamborghini. In particular there’s a lot of Reventon in the kit, not to mention a front end that resembles the Estoque sedan concept.

Modifications aren’t limited to the body either, with a nice set of Prodrive forged wheels and some AP Racing brakes.

2011 Toyota Sequoia 11

Toyota is projecting sales of 8 million units in 2012, according to parts suppliers who have been briefed by the auto maker. The projections do not include units sold by Toyota subsidiaries Daihatsu and Hino.

The last time Toyota sold such a volume was in 2007, when the company moved 8.42 million vehicles. Toyota expects sales of 7.48 million units in 2010 and 7.7 million in 2011.

Toyota also credited “emerging markets” as a source of growth, stating that traditional markets like North America and Europe will fall from comprising 67 percent of Toyota’s worldwide sales to less than 50 percent in two years.

In August 2009 veteran California Highway Patrol officer Mark Saylor and his family were traveling in a Lexus ES350 that crashed into a riverbed and burst into flames killing all on board. The crash was blamed on ‘unintended acceleration,’ causing the car to reach speeds of more than 120 mph, before it ran off the road.

When Toyota settled with Saylor’s relatives out of court, it began a chain reaction that resulted in one of the widest and most public vehicle recall programs by any automaker in history. At the time, the actual amount of the settlement was undisclosed, instead the parties involved agreeing that the details of the agreement remain ‘private and amicable’ between Toyota, the Saylor and Lastrella families.

Now Bob Baker, owner of the Lexus dealership which loaned that ES350 to the Saylor family they drove on that fateful trip, has gone public with the amount of the settlement  - $10,000,000.

Baker, which saw sales across the 10 dealers he owns in the San Diego area drop some 20 percent during the recession, was hit hard by this settlement, which he says left his business isolated and has been fighting back ever since. He continues to litigate against the families in this case who cite that negligence on the part of the dealer was to blame for the accident.  An investigation by the San Diego  County Sheriff’s Department concluded that an ill-fitting floormat installed by Bob Baker Lexus was the cause of the crash.

Baker maintains the evidence from the accident investigation was flawed and that the real problem was caused by faulty electronics in the vehicle. He says that Toyota executives in Japan weren’t concerned about finding the true root cause of the problem, choosing to settle to avoid the real issue and instead look for a scapegoat – him.

But whether going public with the amount of this historic settlement, against the wishes of Toyota and Saylor’s relatives, will actually help Baker’s cause remains to be seen. According to a Toyota spokesman,  ”Mr. Baker wants the spotlight to shift away from his dealership as he continues to litigate the case with the families.” The saga continues.

There is such a thing of having too much of a good thing. Like gold… especially when it is on a Tata Nano. The most basic car on the road just got pimped to celebrate the 5,000th anniversary of Indian jewelry.

Tata Group, the company that makes the Nano, employed Titan, one of its subsidiaries, to make the very first pure gold jewelry car which will be launched in April/May 2011 under the name Goldplus Nano. The campaign to promote the flashy ride started in November when Tata asked the public to send in designs. Thirteen designs came in and the winner was announced December 24th.

The winning design will be immortalized on the Nano and will be made out of pure gold at the Titan manufacturing plant in Hosur, Bangalore. The contests purposed was to drum up positive attention for the car, which saw sagging sales in the latter part of 2010.

Tesla Motors share price feel by roughly 15 percent Monday as company insiders rushed to dump their shares after the expiration of a 180 day limit on selling their stock holdings.

Tesla’s stock rose more than 40 percent since its debut towards the end of June, and the company received $465 million in loans from the Department of Energy to help develop its Model S sedan.

As of 11:30 AM Tuesday, Tesla’s share price was steady at $26, up from Monday’s close of $25.55

When Ford first revealed the new 2012 Focus at the North American International Auto Show almost a year ago it was vague about a new ‘torque vectoring system’ that’s designed to improve handling.

The Blue Oval has now released a description of the system and how exactly it will benefit customers. Essentially it’s a form of electronic limited slip differential that works by adding brakes to the inside wheel in a turn to slow that wheel and ensure both wheels turn at the same rate. The result is a car that handles better (good for driving enthusiasts) and is also more stable (which is a benefit to all types of drivers). The small application of the brakes is imperceptible to the driver.

Ford’s decision to offer the technology on all Focus models is impressive as previously these setups were only available on some sports cars or high-trim versions of cars, like in JCW MINIs and the VW GTI.

We’ve seen some crazy car builds in our time, but this one might top the list. SVK Customs based out of Sweden has been overhauling a Ferrari 550 GTR to one exotic machine. Just a brief overview will make any enthusiast drop their jaw: custom carbon fiber widebody kit, BMW powerplant and custom fabricated suspension components to give it some extreme steering angles for drifting – yes drifting.

A closer look at the suspension components reveals plenty of custom fabrication along with center-bolt hubs for the wheels.

For horsepower, SVK wasn’t content with the factory Italian V12, so in went a BMW European V8 with desires of obtaining over 1,000-hp. Yikes.

If you are the owner of an Apple iPhone and a Ford vehicle equipped with the SYNC system, you may have noticed that your phone and your car don’t like talking to each other.

That’s probably due to the fact that the SYNC system was developed by Microsoft, and since Bill Gates is not exactly best friends with Steve Jobs of Apple, the lack of communication between the two systems was likely deliberate.

So unless you have a RIM or Android operating system, your SYNC system could not be all that it could be. However, Ford has now announced that the next generation of SYNC will feature AppLink, which will happily talk with your iPhone, and this system will be first available to Fiesta customers.

Among the first apps to work with the SYNC system include Pandora internet radio, Stitcher news radio and OpenBeak. More apps adaptability is on its way says Ford.

So if you’ve been ignoring Fords because your iPhone didn’t work in them, rest easy now, all has been resolved.

Porsche has officially confirmed it will debut an all new super sports car at the Detroit Auto Show in January and a report out of Germany suggests something very impressive.

While Porsche has been understandably tight-lipped on details, the vehicle is believed to be a twin-turbo V8-powered supercar, making 600-hp. It will be a mid-engined machine and utilize an AWD system to deliver all that power to the ground with maximum grip.

The body will use a considerable amount of carbon fiber.

This latest rumor piles on speculation as to exactly what Porsche will debut in Detroit, with early reports suggesting it will be a production version of the 918 Spider, while there’s also the possibility that it could be a coupe version of the Panamera, known as the 928.

Check back for full Detroit Auto Show coverage on January 10th. Until then, see our complete Detroit Auto Show preview here.

A design sketch of what is rumored to be the logo for the upcoming Toyota FT-86 has surfaced online, clearly highlighting the Japanese sports car will be powered by a boxer engine.

The design sketch shows two horizontally opposed pistons; an engine design that has earned the ‘boxer’ title because of its visual similarity to two boxers tossing punches.

Rather than a crank in the middle, however, the sketch shows a stylized number 86, in reference to the rear-drive AE86 Corolla model that formed the inspiration of more than just the name of the FT-86.

Rumors have indicated the production FT-86 will get a 2.0-liter boxer 4-cylinder engine, donated from Subaru and if this is in fact the actual logo for the car, then those rumors would look to be true.

It’s not clear how the logo will be incorporated into the U.S. model, however, with recent reports indicating the car will be a Scion model and wear the FR-S badge.
