It’s official, the very last Mercury has now left the building. On Tuesday, January 4th at 8:00 am, said vehicle, a 2011 Grand Marquis, finally rolled off the line at the St. Thomas plant, which has been building these body-on-frame behemoths for 25 years.

Originally the car was slated to be completed before the new year, but delays in parts shipments, caused by severe weather in Southwestern Ontario, pushed production into the first days of the new year.

Even until the very end, the Grand Marquis remained a highly profitable vehicle for Lincoln-Mercury dealers as well as the best selling car in the lineup. As was probably expected, there was little fanfare or celebration, as the car was rolled on to the transporter, to be delivered as part of a fleet order.

Although the Merc represented the last Grand Marquis built at St Thomas, it isn’t quite the end of Panther chassis production. Ford Crown Victorias will continue to be assembled there, primarily for police and taxi fleets, until September, when the plant is scheduled to close.

THE MERCURY GRAND MARQUE SHOULD NOT DISCONTINUE. I AM ALARGE MAN WITH THE SEAT ALL THE WAY BACK AND SLIGHTLY TILTED MY BEELLY ALMOST HITS THE STEARRING WHEEL. WHAT WILL I DO WHEN MY 2009 GIVES UP. THESE VEHICLES ARE GOOD FOR ABOUT 200000 MILES WITH OUT MAJOR PROBLEMS. WE NEED BIG CARS FOR SAFETY. I HAD A HEAD ON COLLISION WITH SOMEONE IN AJEEP 4X4 AND I WALKED AWAY WITH JUST BRUSES. IF IT HAD BEEN A SMALL CAR I WOULD HAVE BEEN PLAYING A HARP. MR WEBB WOODSTOWN NEW JERSEY

Most owned/ maintained well by older folks, mpg avg is 20mpg on reg up to late 20s on highway, very reliable, cheap to maintain, upscale, quiet and safer! Don’t look half bad either! Bet one can find an 03 with under 75k mi for $5,000 or less now! 289 V-8 too! (281) Call it 2 ton of fun! I’m buying one for my 16 yo daughter!

I was able to obtain a very nice 2010 Merc Gr Marq out of Las Vegas. I have three now. 1984,1996 and the 2010. All are fantastic cars. I hope that I will still be driving the 2010 for another 20 years. Love the size, the ride and the V8. Can’t ever see myself buying a front wheel drive. Hope that Ford sees the light and brings back the large sedan.
