Those Europeans, they do love their oil burners. And so far they’re really the only ones who’ve made serious attempts at selling diesel powered passenger vehicles stateside.

Mercedes-Benz, perhaps the biggest proponent of the technology in the New World, currently offers four amongst its U.S. lineup. These include the R, ML and GL class SUVs, as well as the new E-class sedan. All use M-B’s Bluetec system which injects a urea like substance into the exhaust stream, along with Nitrogen Oxide reducers to help these vehicles meet ultra stringent North American emissions standards.

However, the Stuttgart automaker now plans to bolster its diesel offerings over here; a facelifted S-class will be available with a 3.0-liter turbo diesel V6, likely sometime in the fall, alongside an oil burning GLK.

The latter is an interesting one, for it will probably use a version of the 2.1-liter diesel unit currently offered on European market GLKs. Rated at 204 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque across the pond, this engine allows the premium crossover to scoot to 60 mph in under 8 seconds and top more than 30 mpg on the highway.

However, it will be interesting to see how American buyers take to more diesel models, though in Mercedes’ defense, the company has had more success than most at peddling them here. The company’s original 300 SD turbo diesel sedan became an icon in the late 1970s and 1980s and many are still in use today.

Beyond the S-class and GLK, Mercedes plans to offer a diesel version of its smallest car sold in the U.S., the C-class, which will likely arrive on these shores as well, though probably not until 2013 at the earliest. A further possibility, bolstering the total to eight U.S. oil burning offerings is the GLC baby crossover, though sources from within the company didn’t give any specifics, a spokesperson simply stating “there’s a lot of calendar between now and 2014.”

You may want to pace yourself during this year’s Super Bowl. You’re going to need your wits about you if you want to win a 2011 Kia Optima.

For the automaker’s Super Bowl ads this year, Kia is launching a fully integrated and interactive marketing campaign that uses TV, digital, print, social media and in-dealership components as a way to introduce the all-new 2011 Optima midsize sedan to the world. The campaign will kick off with a 60-second commercial call “One Epic Ride” that will air in the first quarter of Super Bowl XLV. To follow it up, Kia will then launch the “One Epic Contest,” where you will have to solve a series of puzzles using clues provided in pre-Super Bowl and game day advertisements and social media postings for your chance to win one of five Optimas.

You can register for the game starting today at www.oneepiccontest.com, where you make your way through a grid-based hieroglyphic game set in an ancient temple. Over the days leading up to the Super Bowl, look for clues hidden within various media channels, including 15-second TV spots, print ads and social media postings, to answer a series of four questions. During the Super Bowl on February 6, a fifth question will be revealed right before the “One Epic Ride” ad airs (which also contains the answer to the final question).

VW XL1 Concept 04.jpg

Ahead of its debut at the Qatar Motor Show, Volkswagen has unveiled a a new version of its 1L (1 Liter) car, bringing the company’s goal of delivering a production vehicle that can travel 100 km (62 miles) on a single liter of diesel fuel. The XL1 Prototype, achieves 0.9 l/100 km, or 261-mpg.

Powering the carbon fiber shell is a plug-in diesel hybrid powertrain, using a 2-cylinder TDI motor with 48-hp, mated to a 27-hp electric motor and using a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. Volkswagen also says that due to the plug-in hybrid setup, the power contained in the lithium-ion battery pack can propel the car 35 km (roughly 22 miles) emissions free.

It may look like a bizarre concept, but Volkswagen clearly indicates this vehicle as a prototype, highlighting the side-by-side seating, rather than the odd tandem setup in the L1 concept from the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. It even has a near-production interior.

Also of note, VW says it has achieved “significant reductions in productions costs” for carbon fiber reinforced polymer parts (CFRP) allowing this project to move ahead. In the past execs at the German automaker have indicated the car will see production in 2013.

The Chevy Volt works as a car and as a green transportation solution, but as a business case it’s less sound. Helped by massive tax incentives to make the $41,000 entry price a more attractive number to consumers, GM insists demand for the car is strong, repeatedly announcing new plans to up production numbers. That, however, may not be the case moving forward.

General Motors CEO Dan Akerson commented last week that he intends to sell 25,000 Volts this year, followed by 120,000 units in 2012 – double the originally forecasted and already optimistic number.

A recent look at the auto market by the analysts at TrueCar revealed that currently no car on the market priced at over $41,000 sells at a volume that high. There is, however, one truck that fits the bill, the Ford Super Duty.

For argument’s sake, thanks to those tax incentives the Volt doesn’t cost anywhere near $41,000 currently, but that taxpayer funded reserve is set to run out once GM reaches the 200,000 mark.

In comparison, Toyota has sold just 120,000 Prius models in only three years, priced at a more modest $25,000.

Ferrari FF 04.jpg

Ferrari has revealed a selection of new photos of the new FF model – or should we say photo. Along with one pic of the car in silver (or the much-sexier sounding ‘Grigio Ferro Met. gery), the remainder of the photos show a camouflaged version of the car testing in the snow-covered roads of Sweden and Finland.

Ferrari is eager to promote the new 4RM AWD system found in the new ‘Fast Four’ model. Known for building only rear-drive cars, the FF gets Ferrari’s first AWD system that the company claims weighs half that of a conventional setup and allows for an ideal 47:53 weight distribution.

Should you need reminding, the FF is powered by a direct-injection 6.3-liter V12 engine with 651-hp and 504 ft lbs of torque, enabling a 0-62 mph time of just 3.7 seconds. But that’s not all, with the FF promising improved fuel economy and reduced emissions thanks to the company’s HELE (High Emotion Low Emission) system that cut emissions by 23 percent in the California HELE Concept. While Ferrari hasn’t release full details on the extent of the system in the FF, in the California it includes a start-stop setup, electronic air conditioning, as well as different transmission controls.

Ferrari will release additional information at the car’s world premiere at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show in March. Until then, check out the full gallery below and see AutoGuide’s 2011 Geneva Auto Show preview here.

We’ve heard a lot of talk about what kind of cars might result from the Fiat/Chrysler venture, but until now, most if was speculation.

That’s set to change with the launch of the Fiat Freemont, essentially a badge engineered, Europeanized version of the Dodge Journey, due to be revealed at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

Outwardly, the Freemont is set to look virtually identical to the Journey; indeed both vehicles will be built side by side at the same plant in Toluca Mexico; but aside from minor differences such as lights, safety equipment and feature content, the Freemont will  differ by using Fiat powertrains – 2.0-liter Multijet turbo diesel four cylinder engines, likely rated at 140 and 175 horsepower, teamed with a manual gearbox and front-wheel drive.

In addition, the suspension, steering and chassis have been retuned in the quest to make the Freemont feel more ‘Fiat like’ on the road.

Chrysler’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, automatic transmission and AWD, currently offered on the Journey, are slated to join the options list down the road, but given high taxes and fuel costs in Europe, the vast majority of Freemonts sold there will be diesel powered.

In an effort to simplify the ordering process and keep the price attractive to potential buyers, Fiat will offer just two trim levels, the more upmarket of which will sport 17-inch alloy wheels, special trim accents, standard Bluetooth communication system, rear parking assist, fold down mirrors, automatic headlights and privacy glass.

The old age debate of imports vs. domestics, four-cylinders vs. V8s, high-revving horsepower vs. low-end torque… the argument continues to rage on despite a whole new era of simple hybrids. And while we won’t see many GM enthusiasts swapping in a Honda S2000 powerplant into their domestic machine, there have been plenty of import enthusiasts taking big V8 muscle and shoving it into their engine bays.

Over the years we’ve seen plenty of engine-swapped hybrids from the Honda camp, from GS-R B18′s into Civics to Prelude H22′s into CRXs. Of course with the only popular RWD application from Honda being the S2000, it would only be a matter of time before enthusiasts began swapping in American V8s under the hood of the high-strung two-seater.

So here’s one of the cleanest builds we’ve ever laid our eyes on. Jason, the owner of this Honda S2000 on S2ki, did one hell of a project from the bottom up. Under the hood is a V8 LS1 powerplant while the rest of the car gets subtle upgrades to kept it extremely clean and functional. While some enthusiasts would probably go overboard with the aesthetics, this S2000 is conservative, giving no indication at what’s underneath the hood.

The initial dyno run turned out 317-hp and 333 ft-lbs of torque, a serious increase in power and more than double the factory block’s torque. Plus, it sounds like a beast.

The successor to the Murcielago is shaping up to be an outrageous performance machine. Sporting a 690-hp 6.5-liter V12 engine and a complete carbon fiber monocoque, Lamborghini has now officially confirmed that the new supercar will be the first series production machine to get a pushrod suspension.

Rather than a conventional setup, the pushrod suspension is the very same design used in Formula 1 or Le Mans prototype cars, dividing the work of controlling the wheel and the appropriate amount of damping. This also allows for reduced spring rates, improving comfort. Like the Murcielago, the new model will retain the front-end lift feature, that allows for an additional 40mm of clearance.

The car will ride on 19-inch wheels with 255/35/19 tires up front and 335/30/19 tires in the rear.

Back at the Detroit Auto Show, Lambo execs informed us that the new car, rumored to be called the Aventador LP700-4, will keep the current cars DNA, retaining scissor doors, AWD and the current models massive air intakes. The 18-percent more powerful V12 will be mated to an ISR 7-speed transmission – the first use of a 7-speed with a V12 in the industry. With five gear settings, (auto strada, auto sport, strada, sport and corsa) the innovative transmission will be able to deliver shift times of just 50 ms in Corsa – which is almost as quick as a Formula 1 car.

As for the rest of the car it will be more ergonomic than even the Gallardo, with space for larger drivers. The dash will feature a new TFC instrument cluster, meaning that it won’t have traditional physical gauges, but that all instrumentation will be displayed on a screen.

Stay tuned for the official debut at the Geneva Auto Show in March and see AutoGuide’s complete 2011 Geneva Auto Show preview here.

In less than two weeks the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers will meet in Dallas to compete in Super Bowl XLV and along with a shiny silver trophy, the MVP will drive off in a new Camaro Convertible.

The car will appear on field and will help drum-up interest in the new-for-2012 model, which is expected to help Chevy retain its dominance over the Ford Mustang. Last year the Camaro out-sold the Mustang, despite being offered as just a coupe.

The Camaro Convertible will hit dealerships in February, offered with both a 312-hp V6 and a 426-hp V8.

As a brand, Porsche has plenty of growth opportunities and it appears as though the man at the helm of the German sports car maker intends to take advantage of them.

In a recent interview with Automotive News, Porsche CEO Matthias Muller indicated that with a sub-Boxster model and baby Cayenne (Cajun) being considered, Porsche is now looking at expanding its range with models based on current products.

First up could be a Targa version based on the Cayman model, with roof panels that either open or can be removed.

But that’s not all, with the Panamera’s platform being considered as a donor chassis for a new front-engine coupe model.

In the mean time, Porsche continues to exploit the popularity of the 911 range, today introducing a new 911 Black Edition.
