2012 Hyundai Genesis to Debut in Chicago With 5.0-Liter V8, 8-Speed Transmission

Later this week Hyundai will debut a mid-cycle update for the Genesis Sedan at the Chicago Auto Show with some major powertrain upgrades.

Along with the usual face-lift and trim changes, the 2012 Genesis will get a larger 5.0-liter V8 engine that could make as much as 429-hp and 379 lb-ft of torque – an increase of 44-hp and 45 lb-ft.

Mated to that new V8 engine will be an 8-speed automatic transmission, a big step forward compared to the current 6-speed unit.

Together, this package should help deliver improved performance and fuel economy. The current model achieves 17/25-mpg and can hit 60-mph in just 5.6 seconds.

Website for show does not list the 2012 Genesis debut.

In keeping with the theme of my friend Tom Pass… I must also question the validity of this article. The current TAU 4.6L V8 has nowhere NEAR the performance listed!!! Article state 0-60 in 4.6 seconds – this is NOT accurate. Add about a second to that time, and you’re probably in the ballpark. I believe Motor Trend and a few other publications were able to pull off 5.5 second 0-60 times, if I’m not mistaken. Will the new 5.0L deliver the 4.6 seconds…? Sure hope so!

  • Colum Wood

You are correct. That was a typo. The 4.6 was rated at 5.6 seconds to 60 mph.

  • Jonathan Miller

Ray you stuck your foot in ur mouth..The article says the current 375 horsepower 4.6 will do 5.6 seconds naught to 60 NOT 4.6

  • Ray Finkle

Jonathan… that’s not what it said ORIGINALLY. Foot’s right where it belongs. Regardless… I can’t wait for the specs and the actual CAR to be announced/released officially, so I can decide once and for all what my summer purchase will be!

I am definitely looking at purchase of the 5.0.
