According to the Nikkei daily business news, the M (which is sold as the Nissan Fuga in Japan) could be used as a donor vehicle, allowing Mitsubishi to avoid heavy R&D costs – especially for what will no doubt be a low-volume model. Mitsubishi hasn’t built anything close to a luxury car since the Diamante was cut from its lineup in 2005.
Casting skepticism on this news are recent reports from Mitsubishi boss Osamu Masuko that his company has no intention of creating partnerships with other automakers in order to expand Mitsu’s lineup. An expansion is in need, however, after the automaker announced recently it would cut the Eclipse, Endeavor and Galant models from its lineup.
The Mitsubishi-badged M could reportedly go on sale in Japan this year.
