MINI‘s rumored city car, set to debut at the Geneva Auto Show, now has a name. According to reports, the more mini MINI will be called the Rocketman and will make use of parent company BMW’s carbon fiber investments to showcase an entirely carbon fiber spaceframe chassis. This should give it an incredibly low curb weight.

Sitting roughly half-way between the current Cooper hatchback and the original, it will be the same height and share the same track.

Powering the small car will be a turbo-diesel 3-cylinder engine, which is expected to arrive shortly in the next-generation version of the Cooper. In this package it is expected to deliver fuel economy as high as 80-mpg.

Due to the ongoing protests in Bahrain, F1 officials have officially pulled the plug on the Bahrain Grand Prix, originally scheduled for March 13th.

F1′s governing body, the FIA, and its president Bernie Ecclestone have decided to “postpone” the opening race of the 2011 season, instead starting in Melbourne, Australia on March 27th. A new date is still being considered to the already-full 20-race schedule.

The past few weeks have been full of speculation on whether the FIA would make a statement regarding the humanitarian issue. The deadly protests in Bahrain against the monarchy are still ongoing, and holding an F1 race there after such political upheaval would have been trivial, if not disastrous.

A few months ago the Granite concept, the darling of GMC’s display at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, was slated to enter production. But GM internal management never confirmed it, and the matter was dropped. Now, the GMC Granite has been given the go-ahead for production…again.

Motor Trend reports, from a source within GM, that the Granite will enter production—and will even keep the trick rear-hinged suicide doors from the 2010 concept. It rides on the same C-Segment platform that’s shared by the Chevrolets Volt and Cruze, the Buick Verano, and Opel Astra, and closely shares its floorpan (as well as its functionality and overall shape) with the Chevy Orlando, the too-hot-for-America mini-MPV that GM will sell in Europe, Asia, and Canada.

Except, well, the Granite is more “professional-grade,” which apparently means that the model will live on without a B-pillar, necessitating plenty of reinforcement from the quarter-panels to the roof. This might overwhelm the 138-horsepower turbo 1.4-liter four-cylinder and six-speed transmission, that the Granite will share with the Cruze. Hopefully there will be other engine options available (such as the Buick Verano’s 177-horsepower 2.4-liter inline-four, as MT suggests) to ensure that the Granite won’t be as slow as its namesake.

It’s not yet clear if GMC intends to also go ahead with the Granite Compact Pick Up.

Europe is getting the Grand Cherokee with a diesel as well as special 70th anniversary editions, as Jeep will announce at the Geneva Auto Show in a week’s time.

The diesel will be a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, sourced from the Fiat mothership and built by VM Motori. It’ll come in two forms: one with 188 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque, and the other with 237 horsepower and 406 lb-ft, which also gets around 28 miles per gallon.

novitec_rosso_ferrari_458_italia_1.jpg

Famed Ferrari tuner Novitec Rosso will be debuting its rendition of the new 458 Italia at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Since the debut of Ferrari’s 458 Italia, several aftermarket manufacturers have revealed their own versions, but few can rival what Novitec Rosso brings to the table. With every exotic Ferrari model that’s been designed and manufactured, it’s a guarantee that Novitec finds a way to refine it towards automotive perfection. Their 458 Italia is no different, with an additional 39-hp (609-hp total) over stock, a staggered set of 21-inch/22-inch wheels and an aerodynamic kit thoroughly developed in the wind tunnel to maximize performance.

The 4.5L V8 receives its power boost thanks to a new carbon fiber airbox and high-performance exhaust system. The exhaust system includes high performance manifolds, sport catalysts and a rear muffler design featuring a control flap that can be adjusted through the Manettino button on the steering wheel. All this plus the weight savings from the new exhaust contribute to the performance gains, with the majority of the power gain coming from a new ECU retune.

Through wind tunnel testing, Novitec also developed a sleek carbon fiber aerodynamic kit for the 458 Italia. The front spoiler is simply attached to the factory front bumper while flaps are added to the right and left of the central air inlet to help minimize lift on the front axle. Wings and fender-mounted ventilation louvers (also made from carbon fiber) gives the Italia a sportier design, along with the carbon fiber mirror covers.

On the side, Novitec also designed new side skirts that create optimal airflow between the front and rear wheels. Speaking of the rear, the Italia is outfitted with a new spoiler and carbon fiber diffuser. Carbon fiber touches are also seen on the roof, engine hood, ventilation louvers and fog lamp surround.

For suspension, Novitec outfits the 458 with a set of their sport springs that lower the vehicle around 1.4-inches, while the front lift system can raise the car by 1.57-inches to avoid curbs and speed bumps. While many of Novitec’s wheels will probably fit the 458 Italia, they chose a custom set of NF3 rollers for this demo car. Up front is a 21×9-inch fitment while the rear is outfitted with 22×12-inch wheels.

Lastly, interior upgrades are available – fully catered to the needs of the customer of course. Leather and Alcantara upholstery is available along with carbon fiber accents in the cabin.

As if driving through the snow and slush weren’t enough, the tail end of winter has to throw potholes into the mix as we start to transition to spring driving conditions. As the snow begins to melt, potholes start springing up (just like flowers) and causing drivers a whole new set of concerns on the roads.

Spring always brings with it a new crop of wonders and potholes are out in full effect this season. They are prevalent due to moisture (like melting snow) that collects in small holes and cracks in the road surface. With temperatures all over the place, this moisture expands and contracts, thereby breaking up the pavement. Add heavy vehicles into the mix, and bam – you’ve got potholes.

“Major winter storms have affected much of the country this season. While many motorists’ cars have made it through the winter storm season unscathed, they could still fall victim to a pothole left in its aftermath,” said John Nielsen, director, AAA Auto Repair and Buying Programs.

To help you though the pothole minefield, AAA has put together some helpful hints that will help you steer clear of pothole-related car repairs:

Inspect Tires – Think of your tires as the padding between a car and a pothole, so make sure tires have enough tread and are properly inflated. To ensure your tires are properly inflated, check the manufacturer’s recommended levels (found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker on the driver’s door jamb – don’t use the pressure levels stamped on the sidewall of the tire).

Inspect Suspension – It’s always a good idea to keep your struts and shock absorbers in good condition. Have your vehicle’s suspension inspected by a certified technician if you think there may be a problem.

Look Ahead – This is always good advice. Keep an eye out ahead and check the road in front of you for potholes. Stay focused on the road and not any distractions inside or outside the vehicle (again, this is just always good advice). If you see one coming at you, be sure to check for surrounding traffic so you don’t cause an accident.

Slow Down – If you notice a pothole too late or can’t avoid it due to traffic, try to reduce your speed safely (always check your rearview mirror before hitting the breaks).

Beware of Puddles – Those crafty puddles are in cahoots with potholes and hide them from the unsuspecting driver. When you see a puddle, drive through it carefully.

Check Alignment – If you do hit a pothole, it can knock your vehicle’s wheels out of alignment and affect the steering. If you suspect yours is off-kilter, have the wheel alignment checked by a qualified technician.

Recognize Noises/Vibrations – Don’t dismiss any strange noises coming from your car after hitting a pothole hard. You may have dislodged the wheel weights, damaged a tire or wheel, or broke the suspension components. Have these noises inspected immediately by a certified technician.

BMW has confirmed that it will launch a new sub-brand of fuel efficient vehicles under the ‘i’ badge. Representing the greener side of the automaker’s portfolio, the i branded vehicles will focus on “sustainable vehicles and mobility solutions.”

Set to hit the market in 2013, the first two models in the i lineup will be the i3 and i8. The i3 (an indication that this will be the projected volume model) will be the production version of the BMW MegaCity, which will use an entirely carbon fiber chassis. As for the i8, it is expected to be the production version of the Efficient Dynamics Concept car and use hybrid technology to achieve incredible performance.

Expect more from BMW on the i brand at the Geneva Auto Show. Until then, check out more of the teasers below.

Remember a few weeks back when we asked you what the plural of Prius would be? Well, you let Toyota know what you thought sounded best, and they have decided to go with ‘Prii’ as the preferred plural term.

The campaign, which started on January 10, finally came to a close after more than 1.8 million votes were cast. In the running, along with Prii, were Prius, Priuses, Prium and Prien. Prii won with 25 percent of the votes (Prius came in at a close second with 24 percent of the votes), and is not only the official term recognized by Toyota, it also gets its props from Dictionary.com – just type it in on the site and the definition will pop up.

For about 10 years, the plural of Prius has had executives at Toyota scratching their heads, and with the addition of Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicle (PHV), Prius v and Prius c concept, they decided to finally put the question to the public. You can watch a video recap of the campaign and winning word celebration can at www.ToyotaPriusProjects.com.
