For Volvo, being naughty has paid off: the new S60 sedan was voted International Sedan of the Year at the New York Auto Show.

“Receiving the International Sedan of the Year award demonstrates that the advanced technology, safety features, masterful Scandinavian design and award-winning engine resonate with industry experts,” said Jeff Pugliese, president of Volvo Canada.

The 12-person jury, comprised of automotive journalists, was the same committee that voted the Nissan Leaf International Car of the Year for 2011. The S60 may be new, but it was praised for its dependability.

Subaru is pushing ahead to differentiate the WRX and STI performance models from their lesser, Great-Dane-schlepping brethern.

Unlike their rivals at Mitsubishi, there’s no controversy to whether their rally monsters will see next year. With the new Impreza unveiled at the New York Auto Show, there’s set to be a gap between the models. The Impreza’s new 2.0-liter boxer engine will not be turbocharged, according to Subaru, which means that the WRX and STI will soldier on with the 2.5-liter EJ25 that’s been serving them well for the past 20 years.

The separation gives Subaru the chance to push the WRX and STI even further. Akihide Takeuchi, Subaru’s Product Manager, said that a replacement turbo engine is currently in development, and is not merely a turbocharged form of the 2.0. He also dropped the hint that, like the Evo, a hybrid version may be in the works.

When the WRX and STI throw off the shackles of its Impreza overlords, there’s no telling how far it can go. A two-door STI? A hybrid 22B convertible with a turbo? An all-new ground-up architecture? Subaru fans should be very excited right now.

Michael Waltrip is said to be racing at Le Mans this June, becoming the latest in a succession of stock car drivers to try their hand at the grueling 24 hour race.

Together with Rob Kauffman and Rui Aguas, Waltrip will pilot a Ferrari for Italian outfit AF Corse. Waltrip will test the car at the Paul Ricard circuit in France during an off-week from NASCAR racing. Although Waltrip is being given the chance of a lifetime to drive at Le Mans, his priorities remained clear when he told the Sporting News “I wouldn’t trade my chance to race here at Talladega for a chance at Le Mans, which kind of tells you I might be a bit of a redneck, but getting to go there and see that is going to be really cool.”

Back in January, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration  (NHTSA) reported that, during an investigation of rust issues on 1996-04 Nissan Pathfinder and 1997-03 Infiniti QX4 SUVs, it discovered that serious rusting could cause steering problems resulting in accidents.

In fact, no fewer than 35 cases of severe rusting were reported and of those, 18 vehicles were suffering from steering problems as a result. At the time, the agency was merely conducting an investigation, but now, it’s evolved into a full-blown recall.

Nissan recently announced that it will be recalling a total of 195,991 Pathfinders and QX4s originally sold or currently registered in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin, plus the District of Columbia.

Notice a pattern here? All the states mentioned  suffer periodically from heavy snow fall, with salt and brine often used to clear the roads.

The actual problem concerns a location hole in the front upper strut housing, which can cause salt and slush to seep in, causing moisture to sit at the mating surface of the strut housing and inner hood ledge. Since salt and water like nothing more than a warm, damp environment to feast, over time, the strut housing will literally rot away causing it to collapse in extreme cases and the steering column to break.

Nissan has said that owners of those vehicles in those states affected will be receiving notification and are advised to take their Pathfinders and QX4s to authorized dealers who will inspect the housings and perform any necessary repairs.

Despite a 13 year hiatus from producing road-cars, McLaren is now planning on launching a new road-going vehicle every year, starting with the introduction of the new MP4-12C supercar.

While timelines are still hazy, we do know that forthcoming products include an MP4 GT3, intended for international motorsports competitions, and an open roof MP4-12C. Beyond that, a new smaller sports car aimed at the Porsche 911 and a flagship supercar positioned above the MP4-12C should give the brand a suitable product line to do battle with sports car makers from Italy and beyond.

McLaren also is experimenting with new technologies to maximize horsepower and fuel economy, including new battery technology that can extract one horsepower from a lithium ion cell the size of a AA battery. While McLaren claims that getting this into a road-going car isn’t going to happen immediately, the company is advertising aggressively for hybrid system engineers on their website. Truth be told, there’s far worse than a KERS system in a sports car, even if “purists” bristle at the though.

Although the Cadillac XTS sedan is an elegant and attractive looking sedan that should meet the needs of 95 percent of the brand’s customer base, Cadillac is still interested in a flagship vehicle built on a bespoke rear-drive platform, since executives feel that the front-drive underpinings of the XTS are not enough to compete with European luxury brands.

The platform, dubbed “Omega”, would be able to handle 6 or 8 cylinder powerplants, as well as all-wheel drive and hybrid systems. Interestingly, a diesel would not be part of the plan, despite their popularity in Europe, where Cadillac is looking to grow sales. Cadillac is also rumored to be looking at a super-premium sedan to rival brands like Rolls Royce, but this seems about as likely as a new Buick Grand National being built off the Regal platform.

Consumers are reacting rapidly to rising gas prices, switching gears away from gas guzzlers and instead purchasing small, fuel efficient cars. According to the latest statistics released by Baum and Associates, sales of hybrid and diesel models saw the biggest jump, climbing at three times the industry average in the month of March.

Compared to a year ago, hybrid and clean diesel sales are up 46 percent, compared to the 17 percent industry average. Small cars, like the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit, also saw big gains, with March sales up 30 percent (nearly double the industry average).

As a result of this growth the ‘very small car segment’, combined with hybrids and diesels now make up 7 percent of the total vehicle market, or roughly the size of the shrinking true SUV market.

Increased demand for small cars, diesels and hybrids has also resulted in increased residual values. The Prius stands as a particular example, with the best residual value of any car after three years.

Track tests of the new new BMW 1 Series M Coupe are starting to take place and according to one of the most recent, the turbocharged mini-M is a force to be reckoned with.

In the latest issue of Sport Auto magazine the editors there managed a 1:14.1 lap time at Germany’s Hockenhiem circuit. That’s a tenth faster than the current M3 equipped with a dual-clutch transmission – making us wonder just how fast it could be if equipped with a DCT.

The 1M isn’t, however, faster than any M3, with the old E46 M3 CSL model still holding that title for the Mag around Hockenheim, with a 1:13.5.

Maybe ‘epic’ is too strong a word. Or maybe its just overused these days. Either way, this three-minute glam spot for Lambo‘s newest supercar is worth a watch.

There’s plenty of beauty shots of the Aventador, lots of action and even more CGI.

If only every Avantador came equipped with an abandoned highway…
