Toyota is facing the potential for more recalls as the government’s safety agency has announced an investigation into the Corolla for airbags that failed to deploy. In total the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is examining 170,000 Corolla models after receiving a complaint from one driver who claimed the airbags in his 2008 Corolla did not activate when he hit a deer at 55 mph.

In a letter posted on NHTSA’s website, complainants Fred and Susan Maynard said the incident occurred when they were traveling from Gettysburg, Pa., to Harrisburg, Pa. Neither were harmed in the incident.

Toyota has recalled 19.2 million vehicles globally since late 2009, including 13.7 in the U.S.

I had a 2010 Toyota Corolla S and was in an accident in March 2012,   I hit a truck at 75 mph and then hit a tree.  My airbag did not deploy.  The data recorder in the car says it deployed when in fact it did not.  My car is being investigated in Lansing,  I bought my Corolla for the safety features.  Hmmm, I thought it was a fluke with my car, Looks like this is an ongoing issue!

I was driving on 695 here in MD while going about 20 MPH in stop and go traffic my airbags deployed. This was without being hit or hitting anything. Luckily I was able to get to the shoulder and avoid any further damage or possible injury. Then, while on the side of the road the passenger airbag continued to pulsate and eventually exploded, destroying the dash and shooting a piece through the windshield. Again, luckily I was outside of the car at this point and I did not have a passenger, they could have been killed. Toyota is currently investigating it but I was told not to expect much.
