We know you can’t get enough of the Toyota FT-86 and all its many variants. There’s the FT-86 Concept, Concept II and then that Subaru version that keeps fluctuating between being turbocharged and naturally aspirated.

But the latest to arrive, and the best looking of the bunch, is the Scion FR-S, which debuted this Spring at the New York Auto Show. At the time Scion VP Jack Hollis answered more questions about the rear-wheel drive coupe than anyone inside Toyota had offered up until then. Now Hollis has taken to the interwebs to chat some more and give an inside peak behind the making of the FR-S.

Some people collect stamps. Others collect fine wine. But a select few can afford to collect classic cars. If you’re among those few, you’ll be excited to hear that the world’s first and oldest Bentley is up on the auction block.

The classic car once owned by Steve McQueen is going up for auction in August by Gooding & Co. of Santa Monica, California in Pebble Beach. Still in running condition, the Bentley 1921, Chassis No. 3 is reportedly to be the first car that was ever delivered to a customer. This beauty participated in various rallies in her day and still has enough juice in her to putter around.

Gooding & Co. Car specialist Paul Hageman says the first version of the car, which was an experiment, no longer exists, but the second one was preserved by the automaker. After going through a series of owners in the UK, Chassis No. 3 was once owned by Welshman Ivor Llewelyn, father of James Bond films actor Desmond Llewelyn.

If you’re looking to throw your hat in the ring, the 1921 3-liter Bentley is expected to fetch around $250,000. That’s not a bad price, considering a 1927 Bentley went for around $780,000 at recent Bentley auction.

Back in 2008, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) passed a law that made it illegal to idle your new diesel powered truck, if it had a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 14,000 lbs, for more than five minutes.

This basically means most chassis cabs and trucks with more than a 1 ton capacity, think Ram chassis cabs (like the one shown above), Ford’s F-450 Super Duty, as well as class 6 and 7 rigs, vehicles most often used in delivery and construction.

Traditionally, most trucks used for such tasks were often found idling for extended periods, primarily for convenience, such as frequent stop/start driving or powering accessories, such as refrigerators and heavy equipment.

However, an engine tends to be at it’s least efficient when idling, as well as producing the greatest amount of  oxides of nitrogen (smog). The CARB ruling required that in order to certify diesel trucks for California, automakers had to meet an idle emissions standard of 30 grams of NOx per hour.

One way of doing this is by injecting urea into the exhaust stream and employing a special catalytic converter, to convert it into nitrogen and water vapor, as employed on Dodge’s 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs. As a result, these trucks and others that meet the idle test standard, receive special Exemption Stickers, meaning they can now idle indefinitely.

Even with high gas prices, Americans are choosing fuel effiecient compacts with conventional gas engines over pricier gas-electric hybrids. Sales have steadily increased with the Hyundai Elantra, Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze while hybrids are showing little activity.

Hybrid sales in the U.S peaked in July,2009 peaking at 3.6% and last month sales were down to 1.6% however production cuts and the Japan disaster are playing a factor.

“Even with the fuel savings, it doesn’t make sense to buy a hybrid” for many buyers, says Power Senior Manager Mike Omotoso of J.D Power and Associates. “This year, we had $4 gas (in many cities) but we saw the introduction of compacts that get 40 mpg. All of these cars are considerably cheaper than hybrids.”

The nations best-selling hybrid is the Toyota Prius averaging 50 mpg, while the Ford Fusion hybrid averages 38.5 mpg. However, all Elantras and some Focus and Honda Civic models are rated at 40 mpg or more on the highway.

New conventionally powered cars use various strategies to increase gas mileage to compete at hybrid levels- without the batteries and electric motors that can increase the price of the car by $6,000, according to J.D Power and Associates.

German driver Andre Lotterer will be racing one of two Lexus LFAs that will compete in this weekend’s race, marking the fourth consecutive year that the Japanese supercar is competing in the Nurburgring 24 Hours endurance race.

Lotterer just won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the number 2 Audi R18 TDI and has also successfully driven for Toyota and Lexus in the Japanese Formula Nippon and Super GT Champtionship. He will be racing in the number 119 car with Juichi Wakisaka and Takayuki Kinoshita.

The body and chassis of the LFA race cars are almost completely stock putting them at a significant weight disadvantage to many of the other race cars competing. However, Lexus is hoping to take a class victory as well as a top-10 overall position in the race. The LFA finished top in its class last year, but the two previous years it didn’t finish the race.

The Nurburgring 24 Hours endurance race starts on June 25th.

The next-generation BMW M5 has finally arrived and looks fantastic. The car won’t actually go on sale until spring 2012, so we still have nearly a year before it hits the streets but photos and this commercial have been released and portrays this BMW as a beast.

The M5 has been entirely redesigned but the biggest change is the switch from a high-revving V10 to a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. The new engine will crank out 552 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque mated to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The car is capable of achieving a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds, not bad for a car weighs around 4,000 lbs. Pricing has not been announced but the M5 will probably sell for around $85,000.

The minute long commercial paints this car as nothing less than a monster as it knifes its way through the turns on a track. There are some great slow motion shots at the beginning and hearing the turbo spool up will get any BMW fan excited. We will be counting down the days until we can tryout the M5 for ourselves.

gullwings_at_the_goldengate.jpg

To celebrate its 50-year milestone, the Gull Wing Group teamed up with Mercedes-Benz to recreate their infamous group photo at Fort Point Park with the Golden Gate Bridge as its backdrop. The Gull Wing Group was originally founded in 1961 by Ernie Spitzer with just eighteen 300 SL Coupe owners. 50 years later, the Gull Wing Group now has over 600 owners, all sharing the same passion for the 300 SL.

On June 10th, 2011, almost 50 years post the original photo’s taking, close to 100 members showed up with a total of 24 Gull Wings and 14 Roadsters to rejuvenate the classic photo. In addition, Mercedes-Benz is showing their support for the Gull Wing Group by donating 125 scholarships to provide children with the opportunity to participate in San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department’s summer educational program.

Mercedes produced 1,400 300 SL Gull Wings between 1954-1957 and is one of the most sought after collectible vehicles in the world. Of course now we have the SLS AMG to pay tribute to the gull wing design, which was inspired by the original 1954 300 SL.

tanner_foust_global_rallycross_championship.jpgr

Tanner Foust was able to add another win to his list after beating out Finnish rally driver Marcus Gronholm in the head-to-head SuperRally competition on Friday night at the Global RallyCross Pikes Peak finale. The Ford Fiesta driver opted to take a retirement from Formula Drift to conquer the Rally circuit and leading the Ford Fiesta sweep of the RallyCross Championship SuperRally was a great start to a weekend of racing.

Unfortunately for Foust, Saturday wouldn’t prove to be as successful. Hoping to overtake Gronholm right at the finish line, Foust had a run-in with Swedish driver Michael Jernberg. Insanity then ensued as race officials turned to replay videos to determine whether or not Foust and Jernberg crossed the finish line during their collision, which would have rewarded them with a wild second and third place finish. The officials determine however that neither Foust or Jernberg crossed the finish line and second place went to David Higgins while third place went to Stephen Verdier, another fellow Formula Drift driver.

Watch the video after the break to see the unfortunate, yet entertaining finish.

travis_pastrana_2011_x_games_livery_launch.jpg

Travis Pastrana looks to be going head-to-head with Ken Block on and off the track for 2011. Debuting his new 2011 Subaru WRX STi race car and livery through a viral YouTube video, Pastrana decided to spoof one of Block’s most popular videos by employing the assistance of scantily clad ladies, just not the ones we’re used to seeing.

Funny enough, Mad Media production company are the masterminds behind this video, who were also the creators of Ken Block’s 2011 Ford Fiesta reveal. Clearly it’s all in fun as Pastrana is just taking a jab back after Block called Travis out for “forgetting how to turn right.”

Pastrana will be competing at this year’s X Games RallyCross hoping to claim his third Rally Gold. Throughout the video, Pastrana highlights how he plans to one-up Block throughout the year, including attendance at more events than Block. It looks like Boost Mobile is getting their money’s worth.

Nissan is reportedly developing a new front-wheel hybrid drive system for the next generation Altima Hybrid that may be released as early as next year.

The system will be based on the 2012 Infiniti M Hybrid which utilized a rear-wheel drive hybrid drivetrain. The Altima will use lithium ion batteries, one motor, a two-clutch system with a four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission.

According to a Nissan insider, the front-wheel hybrid drive system was chosen as the most effective way to increase mileage in larger D-segment vehicles and above. As Nissan discontinues the existing Altima Hybrid at the end of the 2011 model year, the company is looking to significantly improve the hybrid system as the competition becomes more fierce in the hybrid segment.
