2013 Hyundai Sonata Facelift Previewed in 2012 Korean Market Model

Likely to arrive on our shores late in 2012 as a 2013 model year car, the Hyundai Sonata has received a mild facelift in its home market of South Korea… although you’d be forgiven for not noticing.

Updates include a revised front fascia (really?), new side mirrors, some new wheel choices and (of course) the obligatory LED taillights. Inside, look for improved materials, with some new trim options and better standard equipment. Several engine changes have been made overseas, but those updates are already a part of the current Sonata lineup in North America.

If we do in fact get these updates, expect an increase price as well.

I am a huge Hyundai fan, having owned 3 Hyundai’s and believe Hyundai’s are a very, very serious contender, if not a leader in many segments.
I am greatly disappointed with a neighbors recent experience with a brand new Hyundai Elantra. I have watched her car towed out of her yard twice. I am unsure what happened on both occasions, but once was due to a brake issue. Not good. Hyundai’s Alabama plant is churning out the Sonata’s and Elantra’s but if they aren’t reliable, it matters not how many you sell and how good they look.
Hyundai’s needs to get their act together, or they will turn into another Toyota horror story.

I wonder if they fixed the highway wandering issues and the steering problem on the current Sonatas?

  • Shane

Just bought me a new 2012 Sonata last weekend and they have to work better on the bluelink, especially the app on the phone, not working at all. Needs improvement, other then that I am enjoying the car.

  • Ramon

Here in Puerto Rico, Hyundai of Puerto Rico, sell the Sonata Turbo Limited with the regular SE radio instead of the premium radio that came with cd changer and 400 watts amplifier. I think pay $34,000.00 for the car with a regular radio not sound good. Also there are not available any accsessories for it.

  • JOHNNIE RICHARDS

I sale Hyundai’s and I can tell the currrent customers that shop Hyundai all say years ago I would have never given this car a chance. But I also see so many repeat Hyundai buyers that won’t own another car. Lets be clear Hyundai is here to stay if you are in the market for an economy car or a luxury visit your local Hyundai Dealer.

  • MIKE

i AM A HYUNDAI SALESPERSON TOO, AND I HAVE OWNED 3 HYUNDAI IN THE PAST YEARS. i CAN TELL YOU THAT ALL OF MY CUSTOMERS LOVE THEIR CARS AND HAVE GOOD EXPERIENCE WITH THE HYUNDAI. MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS ALL OWNED HYUNDAI. LIKE THE PREVIOUS SALES PERSON SAID HYUNDAI IS HERE TO STAY AND WON’T GO NO WHEREAGAIN LIKE OBAMA SAID TIME FOR CHANGE AND IN CHANGE WE BELIEVE IN. AS FOR NOW I HAVE 2011 HUNDAI GENESIS V6 TECH PACKAGE BEST LUXURY CAR EVER TAKE IT FROM A SALESPERSON AND SOME ONE WHO’S FAMILY OWNED BMW, MERCEDES BENZ AND LEXUS FOR THE PAST 10 15 YEARS AGAIN……….. BEST CARS FOR THE MONEY , VALUES AND WARRANTIES ONLY SMART AND EDUCATED PEOPLE DRIVE HYUNDAI AS FOR NOW ……………….

  • Chris

Seriously Mike? That’s the most Kiss @SS opinion ever…

You own a car because you like it and can afford it…. Dumb stuck up opinions is not suited for the masses…

As for Hyundai they are doing well if not excellent. Quality is at par or exceed current competitors. By far that does not mean that all cars in the line are going to be flawless. There are always a bunch the spill the beans and creates headaches. Question is did hyundai took care of the issue? that is the true driver of customer satisfaction and reliability.

I purchased the 2012 Hyundai Sonata at the end August, and I had to go in for the steering recall a few months. I have to return to the dealership because this friday 1/20/2012 because the wiring in the radio. I dont know if its just me but the car idles hard I took it the dealership and they told me it was normal due to the compressor. I have no major complaints. In february of last year I purchased a 2011 chrysler avenger (new) and was left on the side of the road several times due to it breaking down with engine problems. I had to get a lemon law attorney to get rid of that crap, and before that I had a taurus and that had electrical problems so after dealing with that I can say so far the hyundai sonata is the best.

  • Andy

I have a 2011 Sonata Turbo, and it sees a fair bit of 100+ highway driving. (safe to say mine doesn’t wander…) Didn’t have the recall issues with mine, but still got a $25 reward card in apology when I went in for a regular oil change and had it checked out. Absolutely love the car, haven’t had a single issue with the chassis, drivetrain, electronics, nothing.

  • Collision of Souls

Hyundai should receive the proper credit for desiring to resolve issues quickly that come to light. They guard their brand image and reputation for quality and will be building on that in the coming years. This deserves mentioning, for quality is not necessarily common at this price point.

  • travis

my wife and i bought a 2012 sonata turbo limited and its been in the shop three times for pulling hard to the right. the car still pulls hard to the right. sure wish they could get this fixed. also the headlights suck.

  • Erick Pastrana

I also have a 2.0 t from Puerto Rico. So far service had been not so good. Problems with a/c and panoramic roof noises.
Two times to the shop for these reasons still no cure for my car.

  • Gregg Weiss

  • Alanebankhead

We have a 2012 Sonata Limited. We hope they put a powered front passenger seat. Made the car ride
betterand quieter. If not going to obtain a new Lexus ES350 or RX 350

  • Sintax_era

A Lexus ES350 or RX 350?  Like those are even in the same price range!  It’s like saying I don’t like the Genesis Coupe, so I am going to buy a Ferrari.

  • DrJamesWilliamson

Comparing a Hyundai to a Lexus is such a joke.  Hyundai is CRAP compared to a Lexus.

  • Flinder

Cars are all crap…they rust…they sell dumb people prestige symbols. So I rather a cheaper crap than a more expensive one.

  • Sean_l68

The dum is buy expensive crap….haha

  • MARCD

THE CRAP YOU MENTIONED SURPASSED YOUR LEXUS IN OVER ALL QUALITY DR. DOPE.  KEEP PURSUING PERFECTION AND DUMPING YOUR MONEY DOWN THE TOILET

  • Cc

Just bought a 2013 with all the features for under $30k but no they did not fix the ride.  Still quite bumpy especially if your coming from a Camry.  But I’m sure I’ll get used to it and its a small price to pay for having the sexiest car on the block with more features than I know how to use! Blue Link is awesome, Panoramic sunroof is spectacular!  I’m in love with my new Sonata!

  • William

I read so many good things about the Sonata and loved the look.  Did a quickie test drive and purchased it.  I traded in my 07 Camry and the Sonata ride is a major disappointment.  The road noise is so loud at freeway speeds and the bumps are very abrupt and noisy.  Can barely hear that cheap radio at freeway speeds either.  I still love the way it looks but don’t know of I can take the bumps

  • Rainbow9

Hi William. I wonder what the trim of Sonata you drive? Did you compare ride quality between SE and Limited before you purchaced one?

  • Fjm140

have 2011 sonata limitrd with black phantom metalic paint and understand this paint is no longer areplyvailable  Questio  n ?? why not  ??can anyone reply to fjm140@hotmail.com  thanks fjm 5/4/12     ll:00 a.m.

  • Gary

I bought the first 2013 Sonata sold by the local dealer yesterday.  It seems to be a very nice car.  In 2007 I test drove a Sonata and decided to go with a Camry due to road noise, harsh ride and poor quality of finish on the interior.  Seems as though Hyundai has resolved all these issues for 2013 so that ‘s the way I went.

  • Stan

I have the folowing comment/ question: ” Whwre are the promised facellift on 2013 models? As far as I know, all 2013 Sonatas have exactly the same body style, tail lights, whees, etc. Should I wait till the end of summer to see a different?

  • Ramirezmalena

What is the price of the hundai sonata 2013?
