Earlier this year, Land Rover introduced three hybrid-electric concept vehicles at the Geneva Motor Show, and now Land Rover is looking to put them to the test.

The RAC Future Car Challenge is an annual event that showcases technology that we might see in production cars in years to come. Think of it as a motor show that doesn’t stand still.

Land Rover is keen to show that its plug-in diesel-hybrid concepts actually work, and has entered them in this years challenge.

The Range_e is based on a Range Rover Sport TDV6. While the concept retains the production vehicles 245-hp, 3.0-liter, V6 engine, it also gains a 69KW electric motor, which runs on a 14.2KW/h lithium-ion battery pack. This vehicle can be charged using a 240V household plug, and can propel this heavy 4×4 vehicle upto 20-miles on battery power alone.

The challenge will be held on November 5th, in London and will cover a 60-mile route. The target of this challenge is to see who can use the least amount of energy to cover the route in the 2 hour, 45 minute minimum to 3 hour 30 minute maximum time.

As an owner of a 1993 Range Rover County LWB, with just 55,000 miles on it, I am a Range Rover fan. It’s the second LWB I’ve owned…and for someone like me who is 6’5″, having a vehicle with decent leg room in the bag is priceless.

So Rover, Bring the LWB back…AND DO NOT GIVE UP ON A DECENT SIZED VEHICLE FOR US BIG BOYS!…just power them right…like a plug in diesel hybrid running on natural gas!

As an engineer with a limited operating background in alternative fuels, I suggest, no urge, maybe plead, that the hybrid diesel should be offered, maybe as an added option, to operate on compressed natural gas (CNG).

With the Marcellus Shale and so many other deep deposits of natural gas in the USA and Caanda now technically and economically available, there is going to be an infrastruture of CNG fuel stations. Chesepeake and others are planning it already.

And Canadian company FuelMaker makes a CNG home fuelling pump for installation at your garage or solar car port to fuel your Rover Hybrid Diesel while you sleep. The fuel that way is even cheaper.

And with a solar charging station, well how clean can we get….WOW!

The truth is that ANY diesel engine not only runs bettter in terms of power delivered, emissions, and better gas mileage, but will double the life of the top half of the engine.

Currently CNG fuel is about $1.75 to $2.00/gal. In the Company’s press release, they state the Rover Plug In Hybrid Diesel gets 53 m.p.g.

The entire fleet of diesel engined busses in Greater Los Angeles, SCRTD,the largest fleet in the country, are CNG powered. Costs of operation of CNG diesels is lower. Engine life can be doubled.

Where do I place my order. My local dealer doesn’t know a thing about it’s availability.
