Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Gets 112-MPG Rating: 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show

After showing it in concept form almost as many times as the FT-86, Toyota has finally unveiled the production version of its Prius Plug-in Hybrid at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Called “the world’s most sophisticated hybrid electric powertrain” by Toyota Europe boss Didier Leroy, the company is claiming an incredible 112-mpg rating for the car. Believable? Not really, and for good reason. The actual rating provided is 2.1 l/100 km in Europe and while that does translate to 112-mpg, the European test cycle is far more forgiving the in the U.S. Still, that number could reach as high as 70-mpg (or higher) on the U.S. EPA system.

On a full charge the Prius PHEV is capable of 23 km (14 miles) of emissions free driving, after which is operates like a conventional Prius hybrid, eliminating any range anxiety. During this post-emissions free stage, Toyota claims the Prius is still, “much more efficient than the backup powertrains in competitors,” says Leroy – a shot a the Volt (sold as the Opel Ampera in Europe).

On sale in the first half of 2012 in Europe, look for it to arrive in North America about the same time. European pricing is set at 37,000 Euros, or about $11,500 more than a conventional Prius. If that increase holds true, look for the Prius PHEV to be priced between $35,000 and $40,000 in North America.

    Seems like Toyota should have tried to get 20 to 30 miles out of it on electric – would have fit into most round trip commutes then.

    Sounds good, but with a price tag like that it won’t sell well in the States. If they want the “average” U.S. consumer to buy it, they’ll have to either artificially lower the price (like they did when they first introduced it years ago), or find other ways to get the price down closer to 25K.

    Just as ugly as the first one. Too bad. How long will it take to save $11,000 in gas over a regular Prius or even a Golf Diesel?

    @whocares- your comparison is all wrong. The Nissan Leaf is 100% electric, the Prius PHEV is a hybrid. With 100% electric you ALWAYS have to charge it.

    I have a 2011 Prius and love it!!

    @Lars… yeah but after factoring in VW exhorbatant servicing and maintenace cost, the golf would not be even close to matching the TCO of running a PHEV Prius.

    We have a 2010 Prius and love it. Remember this is a hybrid – so best of both worlds since e won’t be stranded like a straight electric miev or leaf. It is also a bigger car than these. Ours has self braking under cruise control lane guidance self parking so a lot more sophisticated than a standard car

    In any of the prius’s it is possible to get a drop in lithium ion battery pack as a plug in from Enginer or others and that will give you a range over this cost about $10k.

    Theoretically if you only do trips of 25kms or less before charging then your mpg is infinite.

    I have a 2010 Prius with 85,000 km on it. I drove thru 2 full years already and have every gas fill and mileage. To date no service other than oil changes.

    I drive 100k at least every day and mostly 50/50 hwy/city.

    Real world numbers 4.6 l/100 summer and 5.6l/100 winter tank to tank ( I always fill it)

    The PHEV sounds nice, but why not get a used Prius and pay the 5K for the private party PHEV battery upgrade? Later a dual CNG fuel option would be nice, but disappointed in the loss of the home refilling station option.
