15 Car Crash at Las Vegas IndyCar Season Finale is Spectacularly Terrifying [Video]

In NASCAR they always talk about “The Big One”. But it was this weekend’s series finale of the IndyCar Series that saw a catastrophic crash totaling 15 cars. Included in the mess was Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon who suffered what could be serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital.

Other drivers involved in the pile-up that saw several vehicles take flight at 200-mph include James Jakes, Wade Cunningham, Paul Tracy, Vitor Meira, JR Hildebrand, Townsend Bell, Jay Howard, Tomas Scheckter, Charlie Kimball, EJ Viso, Alex Lloyd, Pippa Mann, Will Power and Buddy Rice.

RIP Dan Wheldon. My prayers for his family. All honour to the drivers going back on track to honour Dan.

  • Rob

Sadly, it appears that Dan Wheldon has past away. Thoughts are with his family.

  • Rob

By the way…. the drivers did not want to race on the course…. the field of 34 cars was too large for the speeds on this track which reach 225+ mph…. there was a drivers meeting that specifically worried about this type of problem

  • Paul Trood

What a terrible loss. Thoughts with family and friends.

This is a very SAD day as we lost Dan. My thoughts and prayers goes out to the family. RIP Dan Wheldon, you will be missed!!

  • Terry

Way too many cars bunched up. Might be okay for NASCAR, but definitely no good for open wheel racing. They need to come up with a better way to space out the cars during the start. Either that or cut the size of the field. If they don’t make some major changes, this will happen again.

Very sad. The drivers know the risks but to many cars on that type of track not good. Someone paid the price. My deepest thoughts and sympathies for families and friends. God bless

  • Terry Kirbyson

They can not run these race cars on this short track. There will be many more wreaks if the do. My deepest Thoughts and prayers go put to the Weldon Family, friends and the race team. God Bless

  • Fred

I am also sadden by Dan’s death. Maybe the Indy Car circuit safety folks should take a look at cutting high end speeds at certain tracks similar to what Nascar has done at Daytona. What do y’all think.

  • Phillip

sad to see and my prayers are with the family and friends.
but youtube players SUCK because they start and stop so much.
Can’t seem to get their ducks in a row…

So sorry this happened to Dan Wheldon and his family. There needs to be some common sense and not put to many cars on a track that separation cannot be avoided. That is Rusian roulette with those drivers and their cars. A bowling alley if one wrecks in front and the rest plow into them. Very sad. God Bless his family.
