Parents, if you want to set a good example for your teens while you’re teaching them how to drive, put down your cell phone. A new study out says that parents are prone to check their phones while teaching driving skills.

This study, which was conducted by State Farm, surveyed 517 teens and their parents to find out how teens learn to drive. The study found that 61 percent of teens say their parents have been distracted by their phone at least once while teaching them to drive. It goes on to say that 29 percent of teens say their parents have been distracted sometimes, often, or all the time while giving the driving lesson.

When talking to the parents, 53 percent of them admit to being distracted at least once while teaching their teens how to drive. And disagreeing with what their teens said, only 17 percent of parents say that they are distracted sometimes, often, or all the time.

When it’s the parent’s turn to drive, 54 percent of teens say they have seen parents talk while driving either sometimes, often, or all the time, while 43 percent of parents admit to doing it with their teens present.

Other interesting numbers to come out of this study include that 24 percent of parents and 30 percent of teens say they aren’t spending enough time learning how to drive. Teens need about 100 hours of driving practice before taking the car out on their own, and parents need to practice what they preach – which means paying complete attention to what their teen driver is doing behind the wheel.

It appears that Brabus didn’t want to wait until the 2011 Essen Motor Show to release the details on their Mercedes-Benz CL500 and S500 4MATIC tuning programs. In fact, they decided to launch two new power kits for the 4.7L V8 twin-turbo engine, taking the stock 435-hp and 516 lb-ft of torque to all new heights.

The more mild of the two power kits, the Brabus B50 – 490 PowerXtra, takes the CL500 and S500 4MATIC to 490-hp and 575 lb-ft of torque. The B50 – 520 PowerXtra however will give the 4.7L 520-hp and 604 lb-ft of torque. Both power gains are achieved through an ECU retune.

Brabus is also offering the CL500 an aerodynamic package, featuring a new front lip, side skirts with LEDs, a rear bumper and a rear spoiler. No styling package was announced for the S500.

As usual, Brabus has a variety of 18-, 21- and 22-inch wheels available for various Mercedes-Benz models including the CL and S Class. No pricing for the power package of the aerodynamic package was announced.

kicherer_c63_t_supersport_1.jpg

Kicherer has pulled the cover off their Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Wagon project, revealing their C63 T Supersport package that helps give the 6.2L V8 540-hp and 472 lb-ft of torque, impressive gains over the factory 457-hp and 443 lb-ft of torque.. The additional power comes courtesy of an ECU retune and stainless steel exhaust system.

Helping get all the power to the ground, Kicherer also outfits the C63 AMG Wagon with a PowerConverter for the accelerator, eliminating the delay often experienced by fly-by-wire pedal systems. For the outside, the C63 T Supersport packs plenty of sport with the addition of a styling kit, constructed of carbon fiber and includes a front lip, new grille, sill extensions, mirror covers and a rear diffuser. On their demo car, Kicherer outfitted the wagon with a set of 20-inch three-piece RS-1 wheels.

On the inside, Kicherer added even more luxury to the C Wagon with an Alcantara headliner and dashboard, while the seats were reupholstered in Nappa leather with contrasting piano backs. No pricing was announced.

The administrator in charge of the Saab bankruptcy proceedings has told a Swedish court that the process must stop.

“The money is not enough to continue the reorganization,”said Guy Lofalk in an interview with Reuters. “Now, an application [to terminate the reorganization] has been mailed. It should be on the court’s desk tomorrow.”

Lofalk said that the $70 million investment from North Street Capital was insufficient, and that the two Chinese companies looking to buy Saab have failed to reach an agreement with Saab’s owners.

Saab’s owner, Swedish Automobile, said that it would fight the request and attempt to have Lofalk removed from his position.

Distracted driving isn’t just limited to texting and talking on your cell phone. Now, more than ever, there are so many things that can shift our attention from the road  like GPS units and MP3 players.

To cut down on all the potential distractions that surround you in your car, a company called ALPS has come up with a concept steering wheel that cuts out all those buttons and instead offers touch sensitive pads.

Designed to be safer for drivers, the ALPS wheel trackpad would let you centralize all of the commands you commonly use in your vehicle and put it right in the steering wheel. To check directions or change a tune, all it takes is the sweep of a finger, kind of like using a smartphone. This means you wouldn’t have to take your eyes off the road when you wanted to crank the volume on your stereo. In the future, the ALPS wheel trackpad could even incorporate handwriting recognition, which would make it much easier to type in directions to your GPS.

There was a time, not so long ago, when Chrysler sold a big wagon on our shores, and called it the Dodge Magnum.

However, due to a fall in demand, this model was axed in the North American line-up. But in Europe, the wagon lived on, albeit with a different nose and badge. It was called the Chrysler 300C estate, which was basically a Magnum body with a 300C nose.

According to Chrysler-Lancia CEO Saad Chehab “sales in the US for estates are too slow to justify the development costs.” Since we didn’t get an estate version of the 300C, neither will any other market.

What the Europeans will still get that we don’t are diesel versions of the 300C. And while they will start getting all-wheel drive variants and petrol engined models, there is no official word if they will get the SRT-8 hot rod version.

The new 300C will arrive in Europe next year.

Cadillac has confirmed it will debut its new flagship luxury sedan, the XTS, at the LA Auto Show on November 16th. While details of the powertrain have been kept secret, we do know it will be the first production model to make use of the brand’s new CUE telematics system.

Using an 8-inch of optional 12.3-inch color screen the CUE system is designed to offer maximum geek capability while also being easy to use for Luddites with big graphics and simple controls. Also of note is that it offers iPad like functionality with motions like tap, flick, swipe and spread.

Measuring 203.5-inches in concept form, the XTS is a total of 3.5-inches longer than an S-Class, making this one classically huge Caddy.

Powering the concept was a twin-turbo direct-injection 3.6-liter V6 mated to an electric motor, making 350-hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Rumors have suggested the production model could get a non-hybrid version of this same motor, making similar power to the concept. Also look for high-tech innovations like a magnetic ride control suspension.

More than just one of the stars of TV’s Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is also an accomplished race car driver, who knows all too well the dangers of motorsports. With this weekend’s tragic accident at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, claiming the life of Dan Wheldon, Dempsey is joining a growing number in the tight knit racing community who are raising funds to support the two-time Indy 500 winner’s family.

IndyCar driver Graham Rahal is spearheading an auction to help raise funds for Wheldon’s two sons, two-year old Sebastian and infant Oliver. Initially a helmet auction, it has since expanded with the latest driver to lend a hand being Dempsey, who has donated the racing suit he wore this summer when he drove Mazda‘s 1991 Le Mans winning 787B race car around the famed Circuit de La Sarthe. He even signed the thing.

Dempsey has long been involved with Mazda and currently owns Dempsey Racing, which competes in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series with two RX-8 race car.

Official details of the auction are expected to be announced in the coming days. Those who want to help can also donate to the Dan Wheldon Family Trust fund at the Fifth Third Private Bank, , 251 N. Illinois St., Suite 1000, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
