Lexus is looking to expand its lineup with the addition of an all-new model based on the CT200h hybrid hatchback. This news coincides with past reports that the automaker is looking to offer a compact crossover below the RX, possibly called the CX300h.

As the name suggests, like the CT, the CX would be a hybrid exclusive model. Built primarily for the European marketplace it would compete with vehicles like the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. As a small premium model with exceptional fuel economy it would also help grow the Lexus brand in Europe.

Powering the luxury crossover could be a more powerful hybrid system, perhaps using the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder from the HS250h, paired with a lithium-ion battery pack.

Look for a debut some time in 2013.

Past reports have indicated that Lexus is also looking to add yet another luxury sedan to its lineup, as well as a new 7-seat SUV or crossover.

2012-Buick-Verano-013.jpg

With the new Verano compact luxury sedan on sale this year, Buick will look to expand its offerings in a green direction with a hybrid version. The news comes via a list of suppliers printed by Automotive News, detailing all of the companies and parts involved in the current Verano.

According to the published data the Verano is set to get a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain, likely the next-generation of the current 2.4-liter hybrid used in the 2013 Chevy Malibu Eco. It’s also expected that the Verano hybrid’s system will be a version of GM’s eAssist mild-hybrid technology.

In the new hybrid Malibu the eAssist system delivers fuel economy of 26/38-mpg. In a smaller car, look for city mileage to approach 30-mpg, with a 40-mpg rating at least.

Have your heart set on a hybrid compact Buick, but don’t have the funds? Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of time to save up, with the car not set to arrive until 2015.

Maserati‘s Porsche Cayenne fighter will reportedly get a more appropriate name when it heads to production, with the Italian automaker reportedly filing papers with the Italian patent office to use the badge, “Cinqueporte” on its new SUV. With the concept called the Kubang, Cinqueporte, meaning “five doors”, is a rather obvious choice and works with the brand’s volume model, the Quattroporte.

Unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Maserati execs have been clear that the sport utility’s final name may not be Kubang.

Based on the same running gear as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Mercedes ML it’s unclear exactly what engine will power the super-ute, with rumors ranging from a version of the 4.7-liter Italian V8 to a Chrysler-sourced HEMI.

Tentatively named Encore, Buick is expected to get an innovative sub-compact crossover in the near future, but will Chevy get a version as well? That’s the question product planners at GM continue to debate,

Currently Chevy offers both the Traverse and smaller Equinox crossovers, although since the introduction of cars like the Nissan Juke, it’s thought that there’s space for a mainstream high-riding sub-compact model from the bowtie brand. Based on the same platform as the Chevrolet Sonic the new model could be powered by a range of engines, ranging from the turbocharged 1.4-liter making 138-hp and 148 lb-ft of torque to a peppy 181-hp 1.6-liter turbocharged engine currently offered overseas.

Imported vehicles in the United States are selling at their highest price premium in more than a decade, as a result of a weak US dollar compared with other currencies like the Euro and Yen.

The result has been a negative impact on the sales of lower priced imported vehicles, resulting in American buyers switching to domestic brands such as Chevrolet and Ford.

In fact, the average selling price for a new imported car reached a dizzying $31,536 in August, some $7,614 than the average domestic made vehicle during the same period, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Automakers such as Honda and Toyota are reluctant to import smaller, cheaper offerings, which traditionally have lower profit margins, than larger, more expensive vehicles. The aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and Tsunami in Japan didn’t help matters, resulting in supply issues that further hampered both production and imports.

Other overseas brands, namely premium priced European offerings, gained a greater proportion of imported new car sales, particularly Volkswagen and Audi, according to findings from Paul Ballew, chief economist for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. in Columbus, Ohio.

“It’s very hard to import, especially from Asia, small cars right now because of where the dollar is,” Ballew said. “If you look at luxury-car sales the last few months, they’re up double-digits from a year ago while small cars are down more than 20 percent.”

As the Yen continues its march against the dollar, Japanese manufacturers are less likely to offer incentives to move metal off dealer lots; in fact average industry wide spending on incentives fell some 9.6 percent through September, down to $2,498 per vehicle.

In an effort to counter further profit margin erosion, Japanese automakers are also looking to shift more production of vehicles overseas; Nissan is already boosting investments in plants it operates in Thailand and Mexico, in addition to constructing a new facility in Brazil, scheduled to become operational in 2014.

Toyota meanwhile, is planning to spend some 26.3 billion yen, building a second plant in Indonesia as it aims to build a robust supplier network in that country, part of its goal to not only minimize future supply problems but boost vehicle demand in emerging markets.

Even German automakers such as BMW and Volkswagen are investing heavily overseas, the former expanding operations in South Carolina, while the former has opened a new plant in Tennessee, marking the first time that VW vehicles have been assembled in the US since 1988.

According to Ballew, “import manufacturers cannot afford to do what they’ve normally done in terms of bringing in products from Asian markets. You’re looking at some temporary anomalies, but you’re also looking at some structural changes. There is some renewed energy to bring manufacturing into the US.”

Our friends over at Tjin Edition gave us some teasers today on a pair of Ford vehicles that they’re currently building for the upcoming SEMA Show. This year, Tjin Edition has teamed up with Ford to build out a Mustang GT 5.0 and an Explorer, with the Mustang being a follow up to last year’s Ford Fiesta UTI Sweepstakes car. That means the 2012 Tjin Edition Ford Mustang will be built in collaboration with UTI and given away later next year.

The Tjin Edition 2012 Ford Explorer will feature a custom Dupont paint job by LR Auto Body, set off by a set of 24-inch iForged Concave wheels wrapped with Falken rubber. Eibach Suspension will give it a lower stance while bigger Baer brakes gives the Explorer improved braking performance and rotors that won’t look minuscule behind the massive 24-inch wheels. On the inside, Tjin Edition outfits the Explorer with black leather interior and a pair of Recaro child seats, while a Thule bike rack will sit up top.

The giveaway Mustang will also sport a bright orange Dupont paint job by LR Auto Body, 20-inch Forgestar wheels, Baer big brakes and a ton of extra performance thanks to a Paxton Supercharger. Needless to say the Mustang will also get a custom interior. More details on the Mustang’s giveaway will be released at SEMA.

Tjin Edition also teased to us that these aren’t the only two vehicles they’ll be working on for SEMA. Rumor has it there will be a couple of GM creations and a collaboration on a Honda project.

BMW M5 2.JPG

Damon Lavrinc of Autoblog had the chance to sit down with Albert Biermann, Head of Product Development for BMW‘s M Division, and was able to glean some information on future product that should put to bed some of the many rumors floating around about BMW’s skunk works.

First up, the upcoming 2013 BMW M5 will be available with a 6-speed manual. The previous M5 debuted with a 7-speed SMG gearbox, and the resulting outcry forced BMW to backtrack and offer a proper stick after launch. Not so for the new car, which will have the option of either a stick or a dual-clutch gearbox. What won’t be offered is all-wheel drive (due to the sophistication of the M5′s electronic rear differential) and a wagon (BMW sold just over 1,000 M5 wagons world wide last time around, and can’t justify the investment like Cadillac can with the CTS-V wagon).

BMW also won’t be offering an M version of the Z4 for similar reasons, but don’t be surprised to see an M version of one of BMW’s EVs, with Biermann stating “There will be a day when we will not only tweak combustion engines, but electric motors. But we have to continue to provide the M experience.” Biermann also discussed the popular topic of weight reduction, stating that his goal is to have the new model match the outgoing models’ weight, and that due to increasing complexity and vehicle content, weight reduction isn’t always possible.

Back in 1997, Germany’s Michael Schumacher was the man to beat in Formula 1. At the last race of the season, he was in a title battle with Canadian Jacques Villeneuve. The winner of the race would take the driver’s championship.

Villeneuve in his Williams-Renault was on pole, but Schumacher’s Ferrari got the better start and took the lead by the first corner. However, as the race progressed, Villeneuve started clawing back at Schumacher, and then on lap 48, took the inside line at the Dry Sack corner to take the lead. In an attempt to take out his opponent, Schumacher turned in and hit Villeneuve’s car. However, the hit proved more lethal to Schumacher, as he had to retire from suspension damage. Villeneuve’s car was damaged, he nursed the car for the next 22  laps and finished the race in third position, enough to give him the F1 Driver’s Championship.

For his actions, Schumacher was stripped off his second place in the driver’s championship by the FIA. So now while the Ferrari camp mourned, the Williams-Renault F1 team and its sponsors rejoiced and celebrated their victory in the hands of a Canadian hero.

One of their sponsors, cigarette giant Rothman’s wanted to give Villeneuve a very special present, and they did so with the car you see on this page. It is a 1997 Dodge Viper R/T10 Roadster, which has been modified by the American tuning specialists Hennessey. The end result is called a Viper Venom 600, the last digits denoting the horsepower figure it produces.

This car is capable of sprinting from 0-60 mph in a claimed 3.3 seconds, and onto a top speed of 205 mph. Perfect daily commuter for an F1 champ then.

Now this one-off special can be yours, as it has been listed for sale. This car has covered 23,000 miles, and while it did suffer mild damage at one point in its life, it has all been repaired properly since.

This car is located in U.K. at the moment, but the seller does mention that World-wide export is available, and the asking price is only $63,300. That might be a lot for a 1997 Viper, but considering it is a Hennessey and one that has a World Champion as its first owner, it might be the ultimate collector piece for an F1 fan.
