Top 10 Most Fuel Efficient Cars of 2012

Top 10 Most Fuel Efficient Cars of 2012

7. 2012 Toyota Prius v: 44/40 MPG

The second member of the Prius family, the Prius v ranks 7th with a 44 mpg city and 40 mpg highway rating, besting the CT by just one mpg. And while the Lexus is aimed more at urbanites, the v is targeted at modern families, who need space and functionality (it’s got 67 cu-ft of cargo room), but still want to be green. Like the CT200 and the standard Prius, power comes from Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive with 134-hp.

  • CA

The Ford Transit would be interesting for a work vehicle. Wonder what the real mpg is when the van is loaded down with equipment.

  • oietret

Why are they all so ugly?

  • Uncle B

University of Alberta, Canada has a hemp body for cars -Cheap,light weight, and renewable. Time nto add this into the mix!

  • Silent299

Somebody made a mistake and put a Toyota badge on that Civic.

  • Aaron

No CR-Z? It’s an Insight with no back seat! Ours gets good enough mileage to be on the list, and it’s actually kind of fun to drive.

  • Eric

    where is the diesel jetta?

  • Mike

Anyone else notice that the MPG ratings are backwards?
It’s common knowledge that you get more MPG on the Highway.

  • Colum Wood

@Mike: While true for conventional gasoline powered cars, it’s the opposite for electric cars and hybrids (generally).

  • Carlos

The most “efficient” car is the one that serves a variety of purposes, of which you drive for 10 yrs, or more. In my case it’s an 2000, E150 Ford van.

  • Camphoneguy

Ah, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Newport, OR serves as the background here!

  • Cws

They forgot the Prius C, at 53/46 mpg and the Prius plug –
    in at 94 eMPG.

  • Chad

MPGe is a stupid, useless number. It is a marketing gimic meant to make people feel better about driving a car that cannot even get them from Columbus to Indianapolis in one drive. Why anyone falls for MPGe baffles me.

A better number to rate electric cars is giving two max mile measurements. The city one at 25 MPG, the highway number at 65 MPG.

  • nicholas roger wagener

  • letsgobluejays

2010 Golf TDI  @ 130 KPH it registers 40 MPG….Try and beat that. Its great to drive, comfortable and give real world gas mileage….not like EPA ratings which are done at 100 KPH (60 MPH)  Who the hell drives that slow???

  • Rush Philip

    How about the Honda FCX-Clarity?
Hydrogen fuel cell, zero gasoline, and the only emission is water vapor.

  • Colum Wood

You make a really good point. It’s not readily available though.

  • Grumpyoleman

Probably because it cost over $120,000.  These 10-vehicles are generally affordable.

  • nope

Except for the emissions created when the hydrogen is created… lol

  • Antonio

These are the “Top 10 Most Fuel Efficient Cars”, if it doesn’t use fuel, it cannot be considered “fuel efficient”, it is categorized somewhere else.

  • Bostonbulldogg1

Wow. What absolutely bias and useless website. Ill stick with Popular Mechanics, thank you!

  • Asdasdsa

Why cant Top 10 lists be 10 leading up to 1..

  • Silverbullet

    My TDI Jetta gets 53mpg!

  • Colum Wood

Silverbullet: Those are the official numbers. Although you’re quite right that the Jetta TDI returns higher in the real world… while most cars get lower. You might be interested in our recent VW Jetta TDI vs Toyota Prius comparison article:

  • Jibranobot9000

i heard TDI engines can be tuned to get even more MPG and alot more power for a few hundred dollars

  • Dr Twang

Yep, the US of A will never build a quality car with performance and economy like they’ve been doing in Europe for decades. My 2003 406 Peugeot 2.0 litre common rail diesel gets better than 40mpg city/highway and close to 50 highway alone. And it’s a large 7 seater station wagon. But I guess American blood on the sands of the Middle East is cheaper than oil.

  • Justin

They are going by official EPA ratings. That’s great your Jetta TDi can get 53mpg but that is not it’s official nor average user rating (check I am averaging 61.5mpg (90% freeway miles) in my 2012 Prius but I don’t go around saying that is what all Prii should get.

  • No

What a terrible list, my 2001 Lupo used to do 80 MPG, now they have the VW Bluemotion, Skoda Green Flag, Toyota D4Dt’s there are many cars that do over 50/60 MPG Why are they not here.

  • Eph

HAHA here some advice for all you mpg chasers buy a 1996 chevy metro for a 1000 bucks make sure its a 3 cylinder 5 speed transmision and you will get 45-50 mpg US!! (US is the smaller gallone)  heres what you wont get CAR PAYMENTS  and i can garantee when these “hybrid” cars are 16- 20 years old they wont be around with there fancy bateries and sealed transmisions 😉

  • Eph

lets see if any of these fancy “hybrids are around 15- 20 years from now with there bateries and seald transmisions …i wont count on it, BUT guess what is still around that gets 45- 55 mpg US   fireflys and chevy metros, get a 3cylinder 5 speed transmision and you will get just as good mpg than these cars and NO car paymentsNO bateries to be discontinued oe non serviceble engines or transmisions, i payd 800 bucks for mine 6 years ago, ive just rebuilt the motor in 5 hours and 300 bucks, put new clutch in 4 hours no problem These are the real mpg kings and money savers NO wonder they dont make them any more

THERS NO money in saving people money, they will build you cars that get ok mpgs then make sure the maintenence cost will keep them in buseness

  • Jibran

    so true…NO MONEY

  • Jibran

where the hell are the diesel cars? VW’s line up is right up there with all of these hybrids. i dont know why they dont get any publicity.

  • Giturtle

This is so stupid, stating that an electric car does
106/92 MPG when it does not take gas…

  • Phillip

The Top 10Most Fuel Efficient cars have been named for 2012, ya if you have 40,000 USD up to 80,000 USD laying around in your bank acount and this is not adding the service for one of these cars which the cost is equivalent to buying a new car.

  • Karthik Sharma

Really Stupid Adding those electric babies…!!!
