9. Toyota NS4 Concept

Another concept, the Toyota NS4 is a look into the not-so-distant future of transportation. Toyota says the NS4 hints at a unique plug-in hybrid model, targeting 2015 for a production date. This isn’t just the next-generation Prius, but an entirely new model and will feature an all-new hybrid system that, knowing Toyota, will likely change the automotive landscape the way the original Prius has.

In addition, the NS4 previews Toyota’s future styling direction while showcasing two safety technologies that will arrive in production models very soon. The first is a next-generation pre-collision system that works even at night. The second is an Adaptive Driving Beam system that can adjust where the light is distributed to deliver hi-beam levels of light while not interfering with oncoming traffic.

Kudos to Acura and Lexus on the Top 2 cars. They were absolutely gorgeous “must have” concepts.
Honda rounded out a good number of the other sites.

I thought the Fusion concept was mediocre.

  • Tony

The Chevrolet Tru 140S – the poor man’s Lotus Elan (heavily copied from the upcoming Elan) seen here:

  • Bill

Hope some of these concepts make it to the showroom without too many changes. I notice Chevrolet products are always the benchmark for comparisions, especially by Ford, but I can’t help but notice that claimed numbers from many manufacturers on current models end up proving to be overly optimistic, while GM numbers are generally spot on or understated (mpg,hp,torque, etc). The good news is that Chevrolet will be looking over their shoulder in order to maintain their lead and we will all win. All of these claims do not really matter because consumers are smart and will buy the vehicle that represents the best value and suits their desires and needs when it is time to buy. They won’t be falling for all the hype. I believe the best predictor of success for a new model is to look at success of previous versions. P.S. I think the new Lincoln MKZ concept is very sharp, closer to reality, and puts all ten of these cars to shame on looks alone. It should have been on the list in the number one position.

hopefully, the production model will not have the repulsive Acura buck tooth beak grille. i will not even consider an Acura until it completely abandons its current styling. Acura needs to hire the Kia stylist.

  • John

I agree with Bob: Honda and Toyota (and Acura/Lexus) have gone down the weirdo path of car design, excepting the new NSX which isn’t as good-looking as its predecessor. When the Koreans start making better looking cars than these brands, there’s a problem. Interesting stats on the Ford Fusion; if it really does produce these fuel numbers, they will have a winner, especially since gas is predicted to increase continually over the next few years (or if war breaks out in the Middle East).

well considering the source its not surprising the list is dominated by imports. Accord is #6? Really? It looks like the current car with a body kit. Other auto sites were pretty underwhelmed, as am I for that matter. But if you read the reviews here its pretty obvious Mr. Wood is all about imports so his rankings are pretty much to be expected.

  • John in San Diego

okay so they’re going to bring the NSX back, but in an even more exotic form compared to others in its class than its predecessor was?
And did he say “hybrid”? Get outta here, someone’s laying it deep and thick or somebody at Acura let the engineers start yakking to the press without marketing checking what the corporate bean counters had to say. With the middle-upper class virtually evaporating in industrialized countries, the exotic/supercar market has become very competitive and sales figures have plummeted. Even if your offerings are a critical success you’re going to have low sales numbers. Since the kind of people buying these are diametrically polarized from the hybrid market, needless to say if this is a hybrid it is shooting itself in the foot right out the gate with a 500lb jockey.
It goes against the very core of the original NSX’s appeal, which IIRC had an aluminum body and nimble handling, all the calling card of its light weight.
If anyone can pull off such a weird combination it might be Honda but I won’t be surprised if a lot of changes happen before it hits the road- unless its intent is for a money losing flagship to say “look what we can do, but you can’t have one, because we don’t even want to build them at this margin”.

  • OopsYouAreWrong

@John Pretending to be american to talk rubbish about Japanese makers and curiously talking `beautifully` about korean companies… no my friend, Kia even acquired clear traces (badly by the way) from Honda and a n example is the mediocre kia optima which is not much more than a mediocre copy from the 2009 Honda Accord (EU version). Please dont mix mediocre kia with Toyota or Honda.
    Thanks for your understanding

It’s about time that Honda is going to be offering a six-speed transmission in their cars. Welcome to the 20th century, Honda…even if you didn’t actually arrive until the 21st century!

  • Toto

Honda president Takanobu Ito is one sptiud idiot, the concept or near production NSX was killed during the 2008 market crash which Honda should have kept. if Honda wants to be back in the market, it has to go through another period of concept, and that is going to take a lot of time, who knows the market will crash again right before Honda can get it into production. bottom line is you can’t time the market idiot.

  • Viagba

lexus concept most beautiful?  beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but that must be the ugliest front i’ve ever seen!!!

  • BKOne

the tru140s reminds me of a lambo…do like.

  • Scritti Politti

    A lame front-wheel-drive Lambo.  Yay.

    Just call it a Lamebo.

  • Scritti Politti

Ugh, Cadillac’s styling is just embarrassing at this point.  It was dated when it was introduced, but 10 years later?  What a shame to saddle technically competent cars with such cheesy and garish styling.

    RE-DO IT, GM.
