Four British artists proved that tires can be used as a canvas for art when they put their paint brushes to a pile of something most people would consider garbage.

Artists Stefan Marner, John Wilson, Stephen Simpson and Richard Rowan were chosen by Cooper Tire Europe to turn tires into masterpieces. They used Cooper F3 motorsport tires and took their inspiration from the diamond anniversary of the British Formula 3 International Series.

“As soon as I received my tire, I knew I wanted to give the illusion of movement,” said contemporary abstract artist Stephen Simpson. “I’m proud of the fact I’ve had the opportunity to work on a piece of art that has given me ideas to take my style forward.”

Those working on a motorcycle tire drew from a “100 years of motorcycle tires” theme (Cooper’s Avon Tyres brand is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year). Combined, the artists spent 257 hours on the project.

These artistic bespoke tires are on display at Artica Galleries in London , England until February 17, 2012.
