Boasting a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 and twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 respectively, both cars have serious power with 590 hp and 621 hp respectively. There’s really no question that either car is an impressive performer, which makes it all the more fun to watch them wind around twisty switchbacks and rocket through straightaways.
It’s true that the SL63 and SL65 aren’t worlds apart in terms of acceleration, horsepower or really anything on the spec sheet aside from price, but Mercedes made it clear during the SL65 AMG’s New York unveil that the V12 isn’t meant to massively outperform. Instead, it offers a more refined, smoother driving experience.
In the video below we get to see both of the venerable Benzes rocketing around two-lane roads, at times simultaneously. The drivers overtake each other in what could possibly be the world’s classiest game of leap frog before the clip fades away to deliver basic engine specs.
