As speculated, the S-Class convertible will be based on the German automaker’s Ocean Drive concept (seen above) that debuted a long while back at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. But while the concept featured a traditional sedan layout with a folding fabric top, the production S-Class convertible will be feature a two-door setup.
It will still comfortably seat four, however, which will undoubtedly draw comparisons to the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, without the ultra-hefty price tag of course. Whether or not the S-Class convertible will be a hit can be debated, since it will definitely be a different territory for the luxury automaker. The E-Class convertible however, has done quite well – so a larger, more refined and luxurious model could be a big seller for Mercedes.
Don’t expect to see the S-Class convertible next year when the next-generation S-Class hits the market however. It should be another year or two before it makes its official debut.
