Porsche’s Leipzig Plant Builds 500,000th Vehicle

Porsche has announced that 500,000 vehicles have now been built at its plant in Leipzig, Germany.

The anniversary vehicle is a white and red Porsche Cayenne S, converted into a command vehicle for the Leipzig fire brigade. A ceremony was held to celebrate the achievement, and saw Porsche CEO Matthias Müller present the keys to the vehicle to the mayor of the city in thanks. The first car to come off of the Leipzig line was a Cayenne, back in 2002.

“Half a million vehicles in only ten years is a remarkable result for a luxury car manufacturer like Porsche,” said Müller. Sales of the Cayenne have been very strong since its inception, with the vehicle being the best selling car in the Porsche lineup.

“Never have we produced as many cars as we do today, and we are expanding our production for an entirely new model line as well,” said board chairman Siegfried Bülow. The new model he is talking about is the Macan, which will begin production by the end of 2013.
