Last week, Penske Racing driver AJ Allmendinger was suspended by NASCAR after failing a drug test, much to his surprise. Allmendinger now believes that an energy drink may have resulted in the failed drug test.

Allmendinger tested positive for a stimulant in his system, and according to NASCAR that could be any of the following: amphetamine, methamphetamine, Ecstasy (MDMA), Eve (MDEA), MDA, PMA, Phentermine, and “other amphetamine derivatives and related compounds.”

So how could an energy drink end up on that list? Well, Allmendinger is the brand ambassador for “Fuel in a Bottle”, which is an energy drink that has mild stimulants such as L-Phenylalanine and caffeine in it. It’s entirely possible that those ingredients could have pushed the test to report a positive for stimulants.

Allmendinger is undoubtedly protesting the test results, stating that he would never do anything to jeopardize his opportunity as a Penske Racing driver. For the test of his ‘B’ sample, Allmendinger will have his own toxicologist and lawyer present next week. Sam Hornish Jr. will take over driving duties until a verdict is reached with Allmendinger’s drug tests.
