Heading to the 2012 RM Auctions at Monterey will be a rare opportunity to own an Audi R8 Le Mans Prototype race car.

It’s not common to come across a modern-day race car, never mind one from Audi’s prestigious stable of Le Mans racers. The German automaker has been nearly unstoppable at the famous Le Mans 24 Hour Race, and this could be a hardcore Audi collector’s dream come true.

The bigger question one has to wonder is what to do with the vehicle. It’s not exactly like you can take it out on the road, and one could argue it would be a waste to just sit and collect dust. Of course you could always take it out on track day events, which would undoubtedly be a thrill to run.

Bidding kicks off on August 17 when it will be interesting to see what the car sells for.
