While the rest of the world has been enjoying BMW’s M Performance models, America will finally be treated to its first of the new performance machines in 2014 with the debut of the M235i coupe.
Taking place of the 1 M coupe, it will take on the German automaker’s new naming convention, where the current 1-Series coupe and convertible variants will now become part of the 2-Series family. Though it’s not confirmed officially, BMW has plans to debut the M235i at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.
The second-generation 1-Series coupe, or rather 2-Series, is set to debut at next year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and the M235i will be based on that model. Under the hood will be BMW’s 3.0-liter, turbo inline-six with 320-hp that’s currently seen in the M135i hatchback. The standard transmission will be a six-speed manual while a seven-speed dual-clutch will be available as an option. Following the M235i coupe will be a convertible variant later on in 2014.
