Home / Auto News / News article: Dodge Ram Under Safety Investigation for Rear Diff. Failure
 |  Jul 23, 10:31 AM

A preliminary defect investigation on 2009-2010 Dodge Ram vehicles has been opened because of reports of the rear differential failing.

12 complaints have been received regarding the differential, claiming that the rear-differential failed, which resulted in rear-wheel lockup. The wheel lockup occurred at varied speeds, with eight of the complaints claiming it happened at over 35 mph. Four of these eight resulted in complete loss of vehicle control, and one resulted in a collision.

One of the probable causes listed by the complaints is the loosening of the rear differential pinion nut, while the main issue mentioned is drive shaft failure. One of the complaints says that the detached drive shaft end punctured the fuel tank.

NHTSA will asses the frequency and scope of these problems and issue a recall if necessary.

It happened to me as well. How do I complain or do anything? Thought I was going to die.

Call the Dodge company and file a complaint, call the NHTSA.gov and file a complaint!!!  Don’t wait.

2009-2010   You’ve got to be kidding me. I have a 2003 dodge ram. Had the rear rebuilt cause of failure once at 31,000 miles. I now just found metal in my real. Turns out to be c clips that hold the lsd together. I was lucky that the big chunk (size of a quarter) stuck to a magnet in the rear or I too could have had lock up. Truck now has 89,000 miles. My Chevy had over 200,000 on it when I sold it. Never any issues with the rear. If you do a search on the dodge forum you will see that all of these 1500 rears have the same potential to lock up due to broken clips ect. Now Im out of warranty and its up to me to fix it. These problems go back to 2002. Do a search on 2003 models and you will see that all them fail. Dodge ram needs to fix it for all.

They should back this investigation up to 2002. I have a 2003 1500 Quad and on my way in to work yesterday morning, my truck jerked like I had ran over something  and I lost my gear. My ABS light came on and when I got it to the side of the highway, I went to the back of the truck and was standing in a puddle of differential fluid. I looked underneath and it looked like someone had blown the back of the drive-train out with a .45. The mechanic calls this morning and tells me that me that it is “destroyed.” Just in time for Christmas!!

Just had my ’03 rear diff go out too. Drive shaft came loose and beat the crap out of the underside of my truck. Luckily mine didn’t lock up and I was almost home so the gears just ground themselves up while I coasted into the drive. Pulled the pan from the back and everything was chewed up. Insurance inspector said he thought pinion nut backed off too so I Googled it and read this. Of course insurance ain’t paying cause there was no collision.

We have a 2008 DodgeRam 2500 Mega cab.  We had all the maintenance done on the vehicle since we bought it brand new.  We have had problems with the rear differential from the beginning.  In 2010 after bringing it in for service the dealer replace a rear pinion seal they said was leaking fluid.  In May of 2011 we reported we could hear a growlind noise in the rear.  They installed seals, bearings, spacers, gaskets etc…  Finally at the end of 2012 the differential is completely tore up and they are quoting us $3,450 to fix it.   So after doing all the maintenance and all their suggestions for servicing the damn thing it goes out. Especially since some of the parts were replaced on previous services.  We feel there is something amiss here and that Dodge should fix it.  A rear differential shouldn’t go out this fast.  We only have 80,000 miles on the truck.  We are wondering if this problem with the rear differential should not be expanded to other years.  Perhaps there are others having differential problems.  We are looking for suggestions on how to handle this.  We will problably start calling Dodge directly until we find someone who will listen to us, but it would help if there are some veterans out there who know what to do about cases like this.  Thank you for your replies!

The Dodge Ram 1500 that I purchased brand new in 2001 with approx. 86,000 miles on it, has sat on my driveway for the last twelve months the result of a failed rear differential. Last Feb. 2012, as I was braking for a stop light the rear differential suddenly shuttered and locked up resulting with the drive shaft universal joint being snapped in-half with the driveshaft spinning on the street pavement.  This was my first time I purchased a Dodge Ram, and it is the last.

I have a 2010 Ram 1500 Crew cab and my Rear Differential failed and both wheels locked up as i was going doing the highway and it snapped the drive shaft off. i skidded to a stop luckily no one was hurt. i had been complaining about a weird noise sounded like a whining pinion bearing but of course the last three times i brought it in to the dealer ship to have it test driven and looked at it wouldn’t make that noise so they thought i was crazy until it was hauled back on a flat bed this whole time they told me just to keep driving it if i was going any faster i would have probably flipped the truck, i was just getting on to the highway though so i was only at about 30 miles per hour when it happened

I have a 2003 Dodge RAM that has 121,000 miles on it and my rear end is now going out for the 4th time! The first time I had to pay some sort of warranty claim fee, the second time they rebuilt about a year after the first time and the 3rd time I had to pay full price for fixing it! After reading all of these complaints and seeing the comments all over the web, I think I should ditch the beast. Too bad because I’m a loyal Mopar guy…
