The Nurburgring is arguably the most famous race track in the world, and unfortunately, it is going broke.

The ‘ring will indeed declare bankruptcy if someone does not step in, and the European Commission is not going to be the one to do so. The organization will have to be sold in full, or in part to keep it alive.

The state has put up as much as 524 million Euros into development of facilities at the Nurburgring, including an amusement park, hotels and shopping centers. This will no doubt become a large legal battle if the sale ever happens.

Many cite these amusement parks and hotels as the problem with the ‘ring, saying that if motor sports was again the regions main focus, that the track could stay alive.

The rest of the 2012 race season is supposed to continue on un-changed, but as for the future, the German track may be in jeopardy.
