Starting next year, Porsche will select one exceptionally talented driver to participate in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, a support event to Formula 1. The driver will be selected from the Porsche one-make race series worldwide, and will cover a majority of the season budget.
Around the world, the Porsche Carrera Cup series in Asia, Australia, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, and Scandinavia will each appoint one candidate up to 26 years of age. Eligible drivers must have completed at least one season in its respective series before being nominated. The German automaker can also choose a driver from the rest of their one-make race series.
After the candidates are chosen, they will compete with one another on the race track under identical conditions. But driving prowess won’t be all Porsche is looking for, the drivers will also have to show their technical understanding and analytical skills in figuring out a proper race setup on a 450-hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.
The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup has been a great stepping stone for young drivers. Over the years, racers have advanced to international GT and sports prototype racing.
