Audi just unveiled an electric twin-turbo diesel engine setup that it is currently testing which it says can give a “distinct boost in performance.”

Specific details on the technology aren’t available yet, but it the automaker is currently testing its system on a 3.0-liter biturbo diesel engine that normally makes 313 hp and almost 480 lb-ft of torque. It isn’t clear exactly what gains the new forced-induction system will bring but it uses one gas-powered turbo that spools up with exhaust fumes.

The other takes advantage of a small electric motor that spins the unit’s turbine at extremely high speeds in a short time, presumably cutting turbo lag down to practically imperceptible levels.
