The Audi R8 E-Tron has already established itself as a performer by setting the fastest lap by an electric vehicle on the Nürburgring, and the car will be launching on the consumer market by late 2012, or early 2013.
The car gets its power from two electric motors that put out 308 horsepower and 604 lb-ft of torque, making the 0-60 mph sprint possible in 4.6 seconds. Energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery pack behind the passenger compartment, and gives the car a 42/58 weight distribution.
The E-Tron also gets some technological advancements, such as a 7.7-inch AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen in place of a rear-view mirror that uses a small camera mounted in an aerodynamic housing on the back of the car that allows the driver to see an even wider range of view than a mirror would have offered.
Audi will produce a limited run of 1,000 R8 E-Tron vehicles.
