The BMW Group and Local Motors have teamed up to launch a first-of-its-kind idea competition to promote the future of urban driving.
The German automaker will be able to leverage the talented online community from Local Motors, which consists of over 20,000 members to find new inspiration and broader perspectives for future mobility solutions. Titled ‘The BMW Urban Driving Experience Challenge’, the contest will be a two-phase challenge engaging participants in a forward-focused challenge specifically targeting next-generation driving solutions into the year 2025.
The first phase kicks off on September 25th and will run until October 6th. Details of the specific goals and deliverables will be released on September 25th on the Local Motors website.
Local Motors has been a leader in the world of “co-creation” with its open-source community that has helped design and develop vehicles. Teaming up with BMW should create some innovative and creative ideas for urban driving, some that will probably make their way into next-generation vehicles.
In all, $30,000 in prize money will be awarded and the top winners will have an opportunity to travel to BMW Headquarters in Munich.
“With our claim to innovation leadership, we have found in Local Motors the ideal partner with whom to explore new, forward-looking and revolutionary mobility solutions,” says Dr Christoph Grote, Managing Director BMW Group Research and Technology. “The results will undoubtedly be very valuable for BMW, and we eagerly anticipate the extent to which we can channel the expertise we acquire into our series-production processes.”
