Jeep Patriot Probed by NHTSA for Stalling Complaints

Complaints about 2011 and 2012 Jeep Patriots stalling are prompting NHTSA to probe the issue with a preliminary evaluation.

There have been 12 complaints filed with the agency so far, one of which led to a crash and injury. In 10 of the incidents, the stall occurred while travelling 65 mph or faster. NHTSA’s evaluation currently involves 112,000 units and could eventually lead to a recall although an engineering analysis will need to happen first.

“Chrysler Group is cooperating fully with NHTSA in this preliminary investigation,” the company said in a statement today. “The 2011-2012 Jeep Patriot meets or exceeds all applicable federal safety standards and has an excellent safety record.”

A recall isn’t likely to happen for some time, if it’s issued at all. The steps NHTSA is taking now are part of a process that generally takes months to arrive at such a conclusion.
