Now that Jost Capito has joined the Volkswagen Motorsport team, the German automaker is working on adding more high-performance models to its lineup.

Having spent a decade at Ford developing high-performance variants of the American automaker’s models, Capito has more hot Volkswagens planned including a new Polo R and hardcore Golf GTI model.

The MK7 Golf Concept debuted at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, and already a more hardcore version is being planned with even more weight loss thanks to the use of carbon fiber. The more hardcore GTI could be offered as a limited edition model alongside the standard, production variant.

“I have always had the view that the production cars have to support and reflect what is happening on the circuits and rally stages,” Capito said in a recent interview. “I implemented that at Ford, and that view hasn’t changed now that I am at VW. By definition it would mean more than the Polo R. For the immediate future, though, we have to prepare for the 2013 season with the Polo rally car, and then see how things develop.”
