In the ongoing race to build the best electric car, Toyota has apparently developed a new battery that should be capable of taking a car 600 miles on a single charge.
“We may be able to extend EV mileage considerably,” a Toyota official told the Nikkei. “We may also be able to achieve a driving range of between 500km and 1,000km.” The new battery technology uses a sodium-based compound as the positive electrode in the sodium-ion battery, which produces 30 percent more voltage compared to lithium-ion batteries.
The use of Sodium, one of the most abundant elements on earth, will help to keep the cost of the batteries down as well, yet another advantage for the brand. Toyota says the battery could be ready for mainstream use in its vehicles by 2020.
