BMW i8 Prototype Close to Concept Spied Testing

BMW’s new halo car, the i8, ran past our spy photographers today looking the closest to its auto show-going counterparts to date.

The latest spy photos leave the rear side window Hofmiester kink exposed and the rear side skirts match the concept car now. The door handles have also moved and there are new side mirrors. Finally, there’s a more open view of the car’s kidney grilles.

Said to weigh 3,197 lbs with a 2+2 seating configuration, the i8 will have a 170-hp electric motor driving the front wheels and a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline three-cylinder putting 223 hp to the rears with 295 lb-ft of torque. With both systems powering the car, it will have 393 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque at the driver’s disposal.

If all that isn’t necessary, the car can travel up to 20 miles solely on electricity, or also just on gas and of course both at once to offer front- all- and rear-wheel drive options in a single car.
