Smart on Track to Double Sales by Year End

After 13 consecutive months of increased sales, Smart is on track to double its 2011 U.S. sales.

Smart delivered 5,208 units in the States in 2011, a number which “we have a good shot at doubling…this year,” said general manager Tracey Mutura. Through November 30, Smart has increased its worldwide year-over-year deliveries by 2.2 percent, with the brand saying it is on track to deliver 100,000 units worldwide this year.

There are three Smart models on sale now: the Pure, priced at $12,490, the Passion which comes in at $14,490 and the Cabriolet, retailing for $17,490. There is also an EV model, which is being leased to fleets in the U.S., something that will change next year.

The Smart EV will go on sale in eight states next year including EV hotbed California in 2013, with Mutura predicting that the EV will eventually account for one third of all Smart sales.

A second-generation Smart Car is also on its way, due out by 2015.
