Today, the top ten finalists list for the 2013 World Car of the Year Award was released.

The official decision is voted on by 66 automotive journalists from around the world and will be announced on March 28 during the media preview at the New York Auto Show.

There are four awards that will be dished out: 2013 World Car of the Year, World Performance Car, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year. Last year, the Volkswagen Up! received the accolade of 2012 World Car of the Year.

At the Geneva Auto Show in the beginning of March, three finalists will be selected for each category. Jurors are currently re-evaluating the top ten cars, and assigning them points based on overall merit, value, safety, environmental responsibility, emotional appeal, and significance. The votes are them counted by third party accounting firm KPMG.

For the World Green Car of the Year award, the World Car Awards Steering Committee chose a panel of five experts in the field to assemble the statistics and choose a list of five vehicles, which are then evaluated and voted on by the 66 jurors.

The same process applies for the World Car Design of the Year. A group of five specialists gather together a list of the top five new designs, which are then voted on by the 66 jurors.
